Ya, I think just skip Odawara and concentrate on Hakone la.

Yes, if you have the Hakone pass, just top up 1090 yen (one way) if you are boarding from Shinjuku.

Romance car top up can be done without the Hakone pass too.

Refer to this website:
https://www.odakyu.jp/english/romancecar/surcharges/

I most likely will need that freepass since there are trains and buses to take from hakone-yumoto to attractions.

If you're taking shinkansen from Shinjuku, sit on the right for a view of Mt Fuji. Vice versa on the way back.

Please get the free pass!
That's the best for tourists and most important, it is convenient!

So, be it romancecar or shinkansen, prebook at right side will do since both trains shld be following the same path/direction to hakone?

I think for my return trip to Shinjuku, i will prebook at 1pm timing or so. At least guaranteed a seat that has nice view + i will have a time limit to meet before going back. Can walk ard the hostel area for food, souvenirs, etc.

Yeah, alrdy factored the 2 days free pass into my costing le. Now just need to include 2x romancecar 1-way trip inside and to find out about how to best plan out the itinerary. I also saw ur post, so will take that into consideration.

Hakone till 1pm only??
Too short leh.
You go all the way there and spend money on the pass, it is best to spend more time there at a leisurely pace.

If you prebook the romance car, you have to be mindful of the time and may not be able to enjoy.
Also what if got delays?
For eg if crowded and or sometimes certain things eg ropeway not functioning due to weather, then they will arrange bus to pick u up, all these may eat into ur planned time and you may not be able to get back to Hakone Yumoto station to take the romance car on time and that ticket will be gone to waste.
Don't worry about seat reservation on Romance car unless you are travelling during the peak season.
At most if you can't get a seat on the Romance car back to Shinjuku, you can take the usual train back.

Im going for 2D1N. 1st day leave Shinjuku early morning, once reach there, will start to tour around till 7-8pm before heading back to Yumoto for dinner and check in. Then next day check out and tour around Yumoto or other attractions if needed.

Timing is not yet confirmed, have to see how i plan the attractions for day 1...

Hope you have reserved the seats on the right side of the train when going towards Hakone, and the seats on the left when heading towards Shinjuku, because you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day.

Thanks thanks. I just went to change my seat with no extra costs.
Very timely advice.

I am planning to go to Kamakura first from Shinjuku and by early evening check into hotel at Hakone Yumoto. Next day tour Hakone and by 5pm take train onwards to Kyoto. Alternatively , could return back to Tokyo. 2D 1 N but cover both Kamakura and Hakone quite comprehensively.

As some had mentioned, yokohama and kamakura are quite close and doable in 1 day, which is what im planning since i gt an extra day unfilled after extending my trip.

But initial research of kamakura seems to be temples mainly so i doubt i will stay there long. Maybe go there first then yokohama.

Temples will be unavoidable in Japan. I personally prefer a more authentic countryside feel, even at the risk of being templed out, than 2nd rate modern cities like Yokohama or Kobe. Kobe for eg, I really am trying very hard to find a reason to visit it during my upcoming 3rd trip to Kyoto, but after looking at all the info on it, realise it is nothing more than Kobe beef and yet it is very popular amongst Singaporeans. Just for Kobe Beef? So after Himeji Castle which is on the same route as Kobe, I will returning back to Kyoto.

I might do the opposite. Perhaps explore Yokohama in the morning and after lunch you can head to Kamakura. If you have more time, you can explore Enoshima island also and around sunset, the views are incredible.

Kamakura need some time to soak in the experience and atmosphere. Pick a few temples to focus on. Just dont miss the giant buddha for that photo opportunity.

Sannomiya + Motomachi? Mt. Rokko or Mt. Maya? Arima Onsen? Bay Area?

Actually I am thinking of 3-4 nights in Kobe for my upcoming trip. Will use it as base for Himeji and nearby sights before heading to Kyoto and Osaka. Might include Arima also.

Just saw the map and guides for yokohama / kamakura and enoshima island. Seems like it is better to move in this direction for a better flow. Also, i would need to get the Enopass at 1000yen for some of their attractions?

But can all 3 places be covered in 1 day?

Will be a bit tight if include Enoshima. But depends again on how much time you want to spend in Kamakura/Yokohama.

Even for repeated trips, I rather use Kyoto as a base. Kobe is a newly developed city after the devastating quake, so it is not like Kyoto where you can easily pop in and out of culturally rich atmospheric locales in the evenings or any gaps that need to be filled up.

Nothing great about these locations. Better shopping, views or onsens elsewhere. Unless one has been to Japan many times and have run out of options or tired of the same sights. Anyway my opinion is subjective.

For me it's more of spreading hotel costs as Kyoto is damn expensive, especially with 2 kids so affordable options are limited. I might also visit USJ while in Kobe.

Resistay apartments in Kyoto are affordable and big.
Some can even accommodate 7 or more people.
