Recently my wife complaint that our wifi in the house unstable. Read on many forums and everyone seems to boast that this is very much better than consumer wifi routers. So hand itchy went to order a complete set of ubiquiti unifi equipment.
My single AP-AC-LR came first and i connected it to my existing Asus RT-AC78U to test it out.
Did a speedtest and somehow the RT-AC78U has a higher throughout compared to the AP-AC-LR. (~300 Mbps vs ~200 Mbps. Tested with a pixel 2 XL about 1m away)
Is this expected behavior?
Now I'm thinking if I made the wrong decision to change to this
Your wife claimed the WiFi unstable. Can you elaborate on that point?Your problem may be the palcement of the Asus router or you are using a congested WiFi channel etc.
The chief complaint is that her Samsung phone will periodically show the "wifi with exclamation mark" status when using the phone in the bedroom. In the bedroom, my phone will switch between 5G and 2G. My 87U is in the living room. The bedroom is the 2nd room from the living room, so 2 walls away. Yes, I do acknowledge that the router placement is not ideal, but my patch panel, NASes, HTPC, ONT etc are all there, so placing the router there makes the most sense in terms of cabling . Moving to uniquiti will allow me to place the APs to a more central location.
Initial testing result in some buyer remorse, after seeing that the raw speed is not as good as my old 87U
The WiFi exclamation mark issue on android is when a phone is connected to WiFi but can't reach the internet. The most cause in your case is your Asus router can broadcast a strong enough WiFi signal for you wife's phone to connect to the network but her phone does not have enough transmit power to communicate with your router. As you have both a AP-AC-LR and the Asus router, why not use both? Lower the WiFi transmit power on both your APs and you can get full WiFi coverage and the speed from your Asus router when you are closer to it
Do you guys use HT80 or HT40? My AP-AC-LR was set to HT40. I'm not sure if that's the reason for the discrepancy.
I noticed my RT-AC87U was set to 80MHz for 5G. When I lowered to 40MHz, the speed matches what I see on the Unifi AP-AC-LR
Please take note that to establish a Wifi Connection . During negotiation contract phase. Power of Transmit and Receive are both checked before connection established.
Wifi Alliance would not allow this type of lousy Spec to go out of street.
After countless fail on consumer router, i decided to used 7+ yr old mini itx board + tplink gigabytes nic loaded with pfsense as my main router when move in to my new resale flat last year.
Im using UAP-AC-PRO as AP. So far have no issue on old devices. And the speed is consistent too.![]()
Your CPU in your router supports aes-ni? Coz pfsense will require it from version 2.5 onwards.

From what I gather from Ubiquiti's forums some mobile devices that are connected to an AP will lose its connection to the AP while the WiFi indicator still shows signal strength. This seems to happen mostly on older android devices
Spent the whole day pull 2x Ethernet cables through my false ceiling. False ceiling is a pain. The gypsum board caused many small cuts all over my arm.
Finally can connect up the AP-AC-LR and did some preliminary test on 80MHZ. Yep. The speed more or less matches my Asus RT-AC78U.
I've noticed that some of the 5G channels are denoted as DFS channels. Did a RF scan and found the DFS channels all empty. Should I be choosing DFS channels?

I went to look ard the specs for several phones available in SG market and could not find any info regarding the support for DFS channels.
Remotely remembered reading somewhere that DFS is already in the wifi specs for 5G and most phones would have already supported it. Not sure if it's true though.
