Looks like we have similar background.

I am a non degree holder started off in IT as helpdesk engineer(pick up phone call sai gang)
grow into a onsite engineer that checks on accessories items like printers, monitors etc from here got to know some contacts and eventually have a chance to touch on networking, servers etc

Eventually items on the racks getting lesser and lesser, end user software licensing etc all moving to cloud and was forced by the company to take up courses which is paid.

bo bian llst just go. at least until now I still can hold on my job as I am both MS 365 and VMware certificated engineer.
What you do as ms365 and vmware engineer
I always find the job title in sg is very different from what standard job scope defined from global MNC

If you have infra background then it will be easier to learn. I started out as IT support like you, and moved up to sysadmin/systems engineer/network engineer. I have moved into devops engineer/cloud engineer years ago.

I did not attend any courses, everything is learn on job and owning a homelab for learning while outside of work.

How did you set up your homelab?

Power automate is just an RPA platform... like UI path..

Fast api is python web platform to serve api ...

Api testing because I need to get familiar with postman...
Personal interest or requirements at work ?

Power automate because I just got license at work... so play play...

Fast api because you need to understand how APIs work now... open ai is selling their api btw... Udemy is full of openai api courses...

As for testing and postman ... well my coy also uses plenty of api and sooner or later I got to start talking api ... or find another job so ... not much choice ..

And now all looking for AI people ... and without knowing how to automate or how to use APIs .. will be tough

At least must know the terms and talk talk...

Be good with api security too. Should be useful.

Very motivating. You are lucky
My current company got no progression.
Any position opening rather hire than promote someone alrdy doing it
It is not that lucky. Maybe a bit brave . My previous company dont need solution architect. So i quitted and just went for it as a mid career change . I dont think there is big demand for cloud administrators but if you really want to do it you shouldnt spend 6k for what is really a very easy course . Just sign up for azure , aws or gcp free online workshop . If you are stuck chatgpt can solve all your problems.

How did you set up your homelab?
I got a low power mini pc from Lazada, installed Proxmox as the OS, and provision a Ubuntu Linux VM with docker installed.

Why low power mini pc? I can turn it on 24/7 with little worry on utility, and I will be able to access my selfhosted apps from anywhere at anytime.

Some of my containerized applications:
- GitLab for Code Repository and CICD
- Nginx Proxy Manager for Reverse Proxy
- OpenLDAP for LDAP Directory
- phpLDAPadmin for LDAP WebUI
- Jenkins for CICD
- KeyCloak for IdP and SSO
- Portainer for Docker WebUI
- WireGuard for VPN
- Grafana/Prometheus for Monitoring

If you want to achieve container orchestration, you can use the native docker swarm mode or install kubernetes (use K3s for quick and easy setup).

Udemy course is good enough to take the certification exam?
What type of cert ?

For example , CCENT/CCNA needs practice ... just the packet tracer may not be enough...

Programming like Java ... definitely...

Cloud ? You have Azure env to practise ? You can get 30 days but after that pay as you use.
