I struggling with this statin decision for about a year now, combing and reading, comparing data etc etc. Coz the data are conflicting, I have not made the decision yet (esp his other indicators are all good and cardiologist actually OK for him to wait some more).

Will continue to monitor esp with the results of the Lp(a) that I hope don't turn up super high (that will have bearing in my decision making).

Really appreciate your sharing. 'Battling' this in an 'intellectual' way is quite a lonely journey.
Indeed, it is a lonely journey, i had that when I decided to embark on my Food As a Medication Route, no medical professionals in SG will encourage you, in fact most will do the opposite, they are only keen to give you medication.

I think if his cardiologist tells you OK than use the extra time to research further to have better understanding.

Maybe can research further, into the direction of what causes ASCVD... is LDL the fireman or the arsonist ? Is Inflammation part of the equation including periodontal health ?

If you want to put your mind at ease, maybe can do a CAC scan for calcium deposit, but it will not detect soft plague , but at his age if it is zero cant say really helpful as it takes about 5-10 years to develop , but for an elderly man eg 80 years might be more useful.

Ps CAC Scan at public Hospital is 180 at private is 366 all inclusive of GST some years back.

I personally feel that western medical doctors esp in public sector got too many protocols to persuade people to start cholesterol medication early.

I went to Chinese tcm for some other issues, was asked to eat more meat, despite relating to them I got high cholesterol. They like know what is cholesterol but also seems not in their dictionary.

If I daily fast for 16 hours, but without changing eating habits... Will it still help?

i think your problem is u eat too much.

just cut to 2 meals a day, and make sure dinner to lunch is 16 hours gap, and skip breakfast.

only do light exercise like walking for one hour a day at night after dinner.

you can continue to eat normal food....

I try to... But sometimes worry not eating enough. I'm quite skinny. Used to be underweight but nowadays normal weight nearer to borderline underweight.

My highest record is 24 hrs fasting, but I fast once in awhile, sometimes a few weeks gap between fasting.

TCM has no concept of cholesterol.

its all about heat and cold, yin and yang, that kind of crap.

cholesterol is modern science.

if TCM tell you about cholesterol, all these are copying from modern medicine, to try to get customers.

My total cholesterol is 212 borderline case. I had changed my life style for quite long. I exercise very regularly and not really eat a lot of meat. Take avocado etc regularly too. And no family history of very high cholesterol. I just thought that if I did all above but little change to cholesterol level maybe it's time to take med.

Don't self medicate

Agree that TS should not self-medicate.

1) Go register for Heathier SG if not yet done so. Then can go any GP and get subsidised medication.

2) See doctor regularly. Usually when start medicine, the doctor need to know what side-effect you have, maybe dosage not strong or too strong, maybe need to change medicine. Doctor will make appointment with you. Maybe 1 month 1 time first. later become 3 months 1 time.

3) When medicine and dosage stable, then if still want cheap medicine, take prescription from doctor and go JB to buy. Don't anyhowly buy any medicine any dose. Later kena poison also no one know why.

4) Don't anyhowly change medicine. Statin cannot suddenly start suddenly stop one. Body cannot handle, can uplorry one.

I took red yeast randomly on days I felt loaded with high cholesterol foods. Considered as self medicate. Might not be good idea too, since it is still lovastatin in raw/organic form.

Thank you for those that had replied and gave good advises.

I did my body checkup in JB for cost and insurances consideration in event I need to seek more serious treatment in Singapore before buying insurance. FYI, the checkup cost me RM$250 including 5 cancer markers. Thank god no serious problem.

I had moderate cholesterol problem for quite some time. To reduce it, I ate healthy, exercise and supplement ( fish oil, turmeric ). Though, level has not really increased but it remains in moderate level.

One thing I didn't mention is my liver SGPT is 64H, in short, not performing at optimum level. Today I went pharmacy and been recommended to take milk thistle. Maybe this would work so I do not need take medication. Will probably exercise more and ban fried foods. My journey continue.

Will take another test maybe 6 months later. If this thread is still alive I will update my result.

His ankle is 'loose' and so easily sprained (like maybe once every 2-3 months). He is so young and so maybe fix it better for the long run (public hospital doctors will not offer surgery if they can siam and so once they offer, likely a necessity to fix it once and for all). He is hoping to play basketball again.
Ligament can always be strengthened by many reps of exercise to encourage blood flow to the area
Surgery is not a cut open his ankle and tada a brand new ankle, if he over exert he is going to sprain his ‘fixed’ surgery ankle again.
once cut open surrounding tissue nerves could be affected, and after the surgery your doctor will prescribe u the physio exercises
of course if he is going to make a career out of it the pros should outweigh the risk con if not just OT OT can already
