thanks all for your recommendation.

the A7 looks tempting but the release is not in time for my dad's birthday. i think i will stick to Honor 8X considering the wifi issue seen on nova3i

Please be reminded that 8x local sets apparently does not support 5.0GHz; according to Q&A on Lazada Honor flagship store.

Very strange the local sets do not support 5GHz Wifi, wondering the reason— is it just a limitation of the Kirin 710 (Nova 3i does not have 5GHz wifi either) and Huawei needs to add external chips to support China 8X sets — and cut cost for local sets by removing the external chips? Or is it more related to local regulations and somehow Huawei can not pass some tests here — Very unlikely I think.

Looks like Kirin 710 limitation and cost cutting for the local sets.

Local sets is of model JSN-L22 does not have 5GHz wifi.

JSN-L21 and some other models support 5GHz WiFi.

CN set JSN-AL00 supports 5GHz wifi.

Xiaomi SD636 based phones seem to be better...

The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance. 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds

It is that impt?

I went through deciding between 8x or Redmi Note 6 Pro...

Eventually, choose 8x
1. Looks nice

Things I will miss on Note 6pro...
1. Batt (4000 vs 3750)

Questionable..camera. Both are average at best

Yes it is a tough call between the two.

(Just take note the above is for the 8X with 5GHz Wifi)

As for 5GHz AC wifi, I myself value it because my router does not have good 2.4GHz performance but has excellent 5GHz performance— Linksys WRT1900AC.
And even my 2.5 year old Mi Max 1 has 5GHz AC Wifi.

Was considering 8x and 3i but don't support 5ghz, is it a deal breaker??

Noticed that outdoor wireless sg uses 5ghz, means we can't connect to it?

Yep.

No 5GHz for local 8x sets according to Lazada Q&A. Seems have to use mobile data all the time

Huawei Enjoy Max. Almost identical to Honor 8x Max but with leather back and SD 660.
