Both places have shopping n food.

Myeongdong has more hotels n the shops are more mainstream type.
They also have street food now in myeongdong.
A good comparison would be the Orchard road area.

Hongdae is a university district.
Younger people, clubs at night.
The shops are the smaller independent type shops. Lots of small restaurants too.
Not too many hotels in the area.

U can stay at both places too!
Get a feel for different areas.
Distance isnt too far, can grab a taxi to move luggage.

Is is better to stay in myeongdong or hongdae area?
Shopping and food area nearby is a must.

hihi, first time going korea, 3 night in seoul. primary objective - shopping 70%, cafe 20%, scenery 10%. any recommendation on hotels as our base? most importatnt is convenience (cost is secondary, of cos convenient and cheap is best).

thanks ....

Suggest myeongdong too.
Good base for shopping n moving around.
Many restaurants and cafes.
Lots of hotels as well.

Try Metro Hotel if they arent too pricey.

Airport bus is much easier.
Goes almost directly to the hotels in myeongdong.
Hotel can tell u which bus to take.

Taxi would be too expensive n the subway is too crowded n have to change lines.

Yep stayed a few times
The location is very good and u get a decent free breakfast if u book on their website.

The location is at myeongdong but it is at a quiet part so it isnt noisy.
Rooms can be a bit small.

They fully renovated just about 2 years ago or so.

I highly recommend Metro hotel if the price is ok.
Sometimes the pricing can be quite high.

hello got quoatation from them for queen room at 130sgd/night
is it considered ex?

Any hotel recommended for just 1 night around meyeong dong mrt. Budget about $100 for 3pax? One night cos my travelling group is arriving separately and a couple of us is the first to arrive.

There are plenty of guesthouses available at Myeondong which may suit your budget since you are sleeping for a night only. Found this not so bad website on guides http://www.myeongdong-guesthouse.com/

Never stay in these hotels but i can roughly tell the surroundings:

1. Hotel Skypark Central Myeongdong
Very far from mrt stations. 7-10mins walk.
you might think 7-10mins walk is ok but if you travel everyday outside,
the last thing is get back hotel and relax as soon as possible.

Alot of F&B there...so no worries for food. Heart of Myeongdong
and few massage center near those office areas...usually located higher floors

2. Nine Tree Hotel Myeong-dong
Near to Myeongdong station. 3-5mins walk
Near CGV cinema. Uniqlo biggest store
and massage ctr at level 3.
Breakfast at Tous Les Jours Bakery \o/ \o/

3. Staz Hotel Myeongdong II
Super Far from Myeongdong station. 10-15mins walk.
Forget about this....travelling to & fro from stations is tiring.
and
quite far away from myeongdong shopping street.

4. The Grand Hotel Myeongdong
Near to Myeongdong station. 5-7mins walk.
one of the quiet areas.

5. Days Hotel Myeongdong
7-10mins walk to station...also far.
but
good thing is near Shinsegae Shopping mall and namdaemun market
and
walk abit further down towards Namsan Tunnel #3 for Seoul Tower.

6. Ibis Styles Ambassador Seoul Myeongdong
Same comment as Staz Hotel Myeongdong.
Not worth staying there.

If you wanna stay iBis...choose Ibis Ambassador Seoul Myeongdong
different from ibis Styles.

Ibis Ambassador is facing opposite Lotte Shopping mall.
nearby alot of F&B and near Shinsega Shopping mall & CGV cinema &
near the heart of Myeongdong shopping street.
but
the only disadvantage is quite far from mrt stations, 7-10mins walk.
