how do you memorize numbers?

I glance 8 digit number from phone can go unlock my shopee lock without looking 2nd time. But morning I eat fish oil, then got distracted. Come back don't remb if I take already or not.

It does take elaborated efforts to encode and decode. Maybe it’s just a matter of familiarity and adopting the habit. I think for majority of people, spatial and visual events are still much easier to remember than abstract terms and numbers. Imo

I got poor memory so when I tried this method, the end result was "eh, what was the mental image I used to remember this person's name..."

like phone number, ic number... do u visualize the numbers or use sound of pronunciation of the numbers?

moi memorize moi mother ic number using hokkien, so a bit hard to recall the number in english...

Hokkien numbers can be written only in Chinese?
Cannot write/ type in roman numerals?

If you want a highly efficient way, do major system. Turn every number into a visual representation or similar sounding.

e.g. 98851350

98 = Jiu ba ( Chinese ) = meaning bar
85 = Bao Wu ( Chinese ) = meaning treasure
13 = yu san ( Chinese ) = meaning umbrella
50 = Wu Ling ( Chinese) = meaning martial world.

so picture in a bar, a fat man with a treasure head, long hand and legs, is taking the umbrella decorated with sharp knife and trust it to the man who looks like he just come out of the Wu Xia novel.

you don’t have to remember the number, just remember the visual as if you were there to witness the odd events.

When you need the number back, just decode it.
bar = jiu ba = 98
Treasure = Bao Wu = 85
Umbrella = yu san = 13
The martial artist = wu Xia = Wu ling = 50

Numbers are abstract so it will be harder to remember but visual is a lot easier.

The problem is you also have to remember all these weird visuals

Try recalling what was in the visual story I made up without looking at my previous comment.

I am sure you will remember most of the objects in the story even if you have poor memory.

visual > memorising abstract thingy.

However, if we don’t use them for a long time, we will still forget it so a frequent revisit is required until these are committed to a long term memory. So a space repetition is needed.

I, myself don’t really have a good memory and lazy. These techniques help make it easier to pull up information and revisit what I have learned.

Anyway, just a casual sharing. I think people still have to go try it themselves to see if that’s useful for them.

Yah.. it’s elaborate encoding and decoding. It was made weird because it’s easier for our mind to remember these things. Like how we tend to remember weird events in life.

There is a concept called memory palaces, where an elaborate path and rooms are used to store these visual, where we will put these visual into these space, anchoring them inside the environment. Each palace should ideally not being reused. Therefore no mix up..

Says if i need to pull information about certain technical knowledge on kotlin: e.g. how kotlin flows actually works, I could simply visit my bathroom in my house visually and look at the faucet.

That reminds me how kotlin flows work, it emits value like a stream of water from the faucet and it will only start when the valves is turned or open or in short being collected.

anyway, not trying to sell course or anything, just sharing my opinion but best if people really try them out themselves.
