Sign up for regular investment plan with POSB or OCBC. Invest STI etf monthly. Retire like a boss 30 years later.

hi dividends warrior, i have a question.

i dont question the wisdom of investing in ETFs for someone who has no knowledge of financials/accounting whatsoever.

however, as someone who has financial/accounting background, i feel STI's components are kind of deadbeat? what do you think of the components'/singapore market's potential?

I'm gonna jump in here, even though my name is not DW.

I think the Singaporean market is fine. It's trading at historically cheap levels (when you look at the price-to-earnings ratio - basically the amount of EBITDA you get for the price you pay is historically good); it's spewing out dividends like a firehose; and it's got a lot of rock-solid companies (the banks, Singtel, the REIT managers, etc etc). Admittedly it's also got a few really rubbishy stocks down the bottom end of it, but the majority of the STI is in sensible, solid, big banks and telcos that reflect the Singaporean economy.

Hi shiny things , u are the expert around here right? My question to you is that if now at 19 YO I have 10k , about 3/4 years away from NS ( to apply for what other people shared about the POSB SAYS plans). Should I throw my whole load into Singapore saving bonds first? Or how do I get into the STI ETF game? Thanks

Some information on investing into STI ETF using DCA mthly:

1. If u DCA mthly from 1988 to 1Jun 2016, annual estimated return is <2.5%

2. If u DCA from 2002 to 1Jun 2016, it is only <2%

3. If u DCA from 2011 to 1Jun 2016, it is negative!

(assumptions: zero brokerage/commission, dividend not reinvested)

So do your maths before u leap, can u achieve what u want by age 30 with it?

Sti etf return for the past 5 years is miserable and may just turn negative recently, which means there is a chance for it to be beaten by posb esavings account.
