Consider the direct bus from the airport to Hua Hin. At least you need not tear across half of Bangkok to get to Hualumphong and a 4 hour train ride. Google Maps works.

Hua Hin is damn nice! Went there in 2015. Sand at the beach is damn white and soft. Reminded me of the sand of Gold Coast.

To get from BKK to Hua Hin, got many many choices. My wife and I took the bus directly from BKK to Hua Hin. Recommend you book online beforehand because many locals buy the ticket immediately and, after you clear immigration and customs, you probably won't be able to jump into the first departing bus. If your butt is made of gold and cannot sit in bus, then you can get private car hire. It's about SGD 60 or 80 (can't remember) one way where the driver will meet you at the airport. Travel time, same-same.

In Hua Hin, we stayed at Veranda Lodge. It is by the sea so not bad lah, nice bungalow. And not so expensive. We budget travelers ler. You got a choice... pick a resort by the sea, near Cicada Market, or downtown.

Traveling in Hua Hin, you can choose to take taxi, private car, rent car, local bus, tuk tuk, or walk. If you take taxi/tuk tuk, rate is THB 300 anywhere in town even if it's a one minute ride. You can rent a car there. Will be convenient going outside to like winery, Santorini Park, one of the King's castles, etc etc. Else, hire a guy for the day (which was what we did). Decided not to get a car cos didn't wanna bother about parking, getting lost, etc.

Overall, we enjoyed ourselves in Hua Hin. Relaxing place. Not too crowded. Beautiful beach. Relatively cheap (except for the THB 300 taxis).

6/9 will go back in future.

We went for four days three nights. Got into Hua Hin (take note it's about 2 to 3 hours drive from BKK) around 2 PM on day one.

Day two we got the guy to bring us around Hua Hin and the outskirts.

Day three we went to the winery (Hua Hin Hills) for lunch (they can arrange transport for you, pick-up from their store in town), gai gai, relek at the beach, stuffed our faces at Cicada Market.

Day four we came home.

You can take the train back to Bangkok if you are going to be staying there anyway.

Stayed at Verona Hua Hin - near to the beach with sea view and beach access. Good for family.

Must-visit:
- the vineyard
- Pa-la-U waterfall
- night market for cheap seafood!

Avoid:
- sheep farm
- cicada market

@turtlezhu: sorry I mean Plearn Wan Shopping Village, not Cicada market! I haven't been to the latter.

I say avoid Plearn Wan because it's just a fancier version of bugis village. The stuff sold there are what you can easily find from the streets but at tourist prices.
