May be heading to Huangshan first week of June. Will be staying with a cousin in Shanghai so not worried about bags.

Nothing new to update with National Nature park, except for new cable car route on the Western Sea (Xihai).Stay within park with light pack.

Guided tour from here is within the day 9-5pm.
Local guides tour its 2 days 1 night.
Largely it's for the guides/agencies' convenience with cheaper hotels ior their homes n foothills,
It takes 3D2N days staying within park hills, to cover 70% of the talked about parts of the park,
So you can make up how the guided tours go about.

Like what TS said, if you just want to show/tell yourself you were there, then up to you.
If you enjoy geography/hiking/piece/wilderness, and not being herded around, then read this thread fuller.

Thanks...i asked is because huangshan is very big......i was thinking joining a tour group might help to cover more ground. Going at it alone might sound abit ambitious given it is not some small hill.

Dont need a tour group.

Huangshan can be extremely crowded!
Only in the early morning and evenings, before and after the cable car closes off, that there are less people.

U can stay at different hotels on the top, so u dont have to backtrack.

Thanks for replies....I just check n realise limited hotels to stay at mountain top.....n sold out! How early should i book the hotels? I plan to dump my excess luggage at a hotel at huangshan mountain base.....any recommendations?

On my trip there, we planned a stay at one of the hotels up top.
Jade Screen hotel i think.
We had those big luggages and was about to carry them up.

Then the shopkeeper at the large convenience store(near the bus terminal) told us that there are too many steps to carry the luggage up and to leave it with them. Just take a small pack up.
We were quite hesitant to leave the luggage with strangers...
But listened to her anyway.

Fortunately, she was right, way too many steps to carry big luggage up. Whew!

After we came back down, we collected our bags and nothing was missing.
She stored the luggage in her bedroom which was adjoining the store, for a small fee

Dont stay at the Best Western, it is only halfway up the mountain I think.

If i had to do it again, i would stay one night at Tunxi and leave my luggage at the hotel.
Take a cab to Huangshan, climb up and stay another night at one of the hotels up there, preferably at the sea of clouds area(i think). View the sunset n sunrise and then climb down by another side.
Go back to Tunxi hotel via bus or taxi and stay another night.
Tunxi town old street is worth checking out.
They also have a tea alley which sells tea from the Anhui region, at very good prices.

Yup, hangzhou, 1-2 hrs coach ride shorter.
But best timing is overnight train from Shanghai, and reach HS city at 7am, + 2-3 hrs bus rides + cableway to hilltop, I.e if you're ok with sleep on train cabin. Setting off from HZ morning, you likely reach hilltop after noon.

1-2 hours climb (healthy-leisure pace). Fitness pace, like he porters about 40 mins. Choose the more scenic route up, along a gorge/stream.

Dont think there is a way to climb up.

Be prepared for disneyland type crowds during the day! Super crowded.
But after cable car closes down for the night, only a small overnight crowd is left.
Much nicer then.

I was thinking it will take longer....lol.
Is it better to take the Eastern or Western route?
I plan to stay about at least 2 nights at mountain top....might add extra 1 night just to cover more ground.

Plan to fly to Hangzhou via budget....then move on to Huangshan....then move back to HZ to tour 2-3 days before moving on.
I might want to go Guangzhou from Hangzhou.....then visit my long lost friends in GZ, SZ, Macau,.....before finally fly back SG via HKIA.

Have to visit this majestic place just for once in my lifetime.
I might not be able to do it in 5-6 years time.

I expected this one....probably cant see much n position myself well for pic taking during the climb up in the day becoz of all the crowds.

So I still hv to take the cable car to reach the top summit?
