Same here using mate 20x as main and my mate 9 is a good decent spare, no lag whatsoever. Amazing.

Change OK ma, if condition is ok, I don't need new phone, just need this to hot-spot at my office, and getting a resale mate 9 now is very affordable

yeah my mate 9 is still going strong without lags, used adb to remove quite a bit of bloatware as well.

only downside is the lack of security updates since the support is dead.

actually getting a mate 10 is better than a mate 9 if its for spare since price difference aint alot now.

You are absolutely spot on. My phone gets so hot during charging that I was afraid it would explode. And it was after the latest update. Don't know what they did to bring about this heating.

like I always say,
updates shorten the battery life
applies across all manufacturers

have my fair share since the Sony Xperia days in 2013

best is to stick with the factory version

My Mate 9 is now an occasional hot-spot device. Normally, after 3 hours, my TPG SIM card 2 GB limit will be hit and the speed will throttle. The battery will be around 60% at this point. Hence, the battery is good for a continuous 6 hours of video meeting if the data is still available.
