i am using a ibm thinkpad r40 lol... close to 7 years old and up running

So lasting?

My oldest Thinkpad is X61 at 3 years old. Just bought a new battery, upgrade it to 4gb RAM and changed the HDD to WDC Black 500gb. Cost me about $400 to upgrade it. As good as new.

Hopefully can last me another 3 years.

Sounds silly to spend so much especially when new notebooks can be bought for as little as $499. But the Thinkpad is in a different class altogether. Solid hinge, fantastic keyboard that no other notebook matches and its classic black casing. And a 4:3 aspect 12inch screen which I cannot find it anymore.

I've 2 X61. Hence, if one spoil, can still salvage the parts.

The old Thinkpads can last. I got a friend who still has a working condition P2 300Mhz Thinkpad 600. I think that is at least a 10 years old model.

Yeah, can like this say. Or you can call me a IBM thinkpad collector? LOL. i have the thinkpad 380D which is the OLD one, made in japan 1997, i maybe buying ibm thinkpad x24 or x30 soon, next month or so

Mine is 14incher... P4M 2.2Ghz, 512MB DDR Ram, ATI Rage Graphics lol... casing abit cracked though and 1 USB port abit loose but still working fine =D

Do you do a almost full discharge before charging it fully again?

I only run my notebook on batteries and charge it fully again when it reaches around 10 - 15%.

My previous battery cycle count of about 150+. I use and charge it as and when I use it. Battery died on me in 2 years.

The other notebook which I discharge as much as possible before charging it fully is still running strong. Retained about 80% charge after 3 years.

Seriously, just use it the way it is to your convenience. That's what notebooks are for. A Lenovo notebook cost $2k +. Its battery replacement is about $230. About 10% of its cost. Not expensive.

Bro, does your X61 comes with WWAN? Cause I considering buying a 2nd hand good condition X61, I very impress of Thinkpad cause I have T60 but not belong to mine, but i impress of the cooling system cause I charge T60 battery on the palm rest area I don't feel hot even though T60 is running on battery unlike other model

ThinkPad Edge 14" > is it a good choice as I am planning to get a laptop to use at least 5 years or long term. Like to ask if the weight for edge is it good for carrying around?

Get a mainstream Thinkpad instead of the Edge. Recommend T series or R if u still can find it. Edge is using a redesigned chassis which lack some features of the traditional thinkpads from IBM i.e body roll cage.
