Hi hi all the tech gurus out there :)

Can i ask you guys something?

My brother's T42 gets rather hot sometimes and he keeps getting shocked by the computer casing... Should we be worried?

Is there a problem with laptops being hot?

The fan is working cos i can hear it i think haha...

Yeah, thanks and any help would be appreciated

no problem being hot. because its a T42... its old, wear & tear. the cost of the fan should be 80-120 if u wanna replace it...

Hi all, the fan in my T43 just died or at least I get this Fan Error which prevents the machine from booting.

Is it just fan or maybe the motherboard is gone?

Where else can get fan besides service centre? Thanks.

hi all,

If your Thinkpad is really old (say 2-3 yrs or more), you should consider cleaning the insides of the Thinkpad thoroughly as the dirt and dust accumulated can seriously affect the performance (esp. the fan) . This can be done by removing the palm rest and keyboard by referring to the correct manual here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-39298.html. The steps are all excellently documented with illustrations and it's not as difficult as you think. Just don't mess around with the LCD panel if you want to be safe. :)

You'll be really amazed at how much biological matter you can find in there. :s31:

@ perrinrahl, tengsoon, hello8985 - You can try checking out shops in Sim Lim that stock 2nd hand laptops. I saw a few on the 3rd or 4th floor if im not mistaken and it may be possible to find one at a cheaper price.

@ tengsoon - About the static shock, does your brother work in an environment that has a lot of static? Maybe a carpet? it probably occuring because he has some static built up and when he touches the thinkpad, this causes the shock. Try touching something else that is metal first or use a grounded power plug (ie 3 pin) not 2 pin. Hope this helps.

regarding to wat goh has posted,

yes its very simple to remove the palm rest n k/b. all u need is 4-6 screws. but beware when u put it back. dun force to screw it back in if u find that its abit tight. it has to do with ur placing of the parts. i had some problems previously also. but long time u will get used to it... for cleaning, dun use the green thingy... i cant remember wat is it called... use a brush to clean up ur dirt. dun brush ur screen pls it may cause sratches. if u wanna clean ur screen or cover use a anti static foam cleaner with a 3m cloth...

i hope this helps.

I believe the fans are different based on the diagrams in the documentation (you can find them in the link I provided earlier), also the part numbers are different (though there are some instances where parts are identical but have different numbers)

dasanyuan, what type of brush do you normally use? Is it ok to use a stiff bristle brush like those for painting walls (but smaller) and cotton ear buds?

How come edge under thinkpad family?

Thought thinkpad is the distinct black titanium alloy metal. That's the reason why I spend tons snd tons on money on my Thinkpad notebooks. It's really worth the money, not mentioning the superb after sales service. The only thing I don't like is that the CSO ask so many questions over the phone when I had a problem with my X61. Told him what I had done to troubleshoot but still ask me to carry out unnecessary troubleshhoting. Seems like he was merely following documentation. Waste my time.

its called thinkpad edge right? lol. thinkpads n, v series under us. us meaning changi business park + parkview square.

fyi, its not wat black titanium alloy... haha u think exhaust pipe ah? or manifold? its power coat la for some models...

the cso is the technical help agent. he's job is to try solve it before the last resort is to use ur onsite or carry in. so u cant blame him...

chill la... its friday. TGIF! :s13:
