thinking of getting a new thinkpad with dual hdd bays so that i can put 1x ssd and 1x hdd inside.. do such models exist? :)

You can do that for all 14- and 15-inch T / W series by sacrificing the optical drive, and getting a SATA HDD caddy that fits into the Ultrabay.

I believe the W700/W701 has dual hard drive bays, in addition to the Ultrabay.

Or you can also consider the X-series with the ultrabase...that will give you 2 drive slots as well

thanks for the replies! i did consider swapping the optical drive for the ultrabay+hdd, but i read somewhere that the SATA speed will be reduced considerably? not sure how true it is..

and yea, i was thinking of having a laptop with 2x built-in hdd bays. not really considering the ultrabase atm. i'll research more on the W series then.

thanks!

edit: i was looking through the hardware maintenance manuals.. and it does seem that only the W-series has 2x built-in hdd bays :( where can i find the ultrabay sata hdd part on the website? i searched under Storage but cant seem to find it.. any idea on the pricing?

You mean this? http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=2478535BAB3C417CA9D77F5867D31462

Would likely cost $100-ish locally

Only the W70x models have 2 HDD bays, not the W5x0.

I use the Ultrabay HDD for storage only, so haven't noticed a speed difference in running it from there, but there's probably a difference in speed if using as an OS drive.

The Ultrabay SATA HDD caddy is available in Funan from Add-on Systems, it's about $100 (genuine Lenovo part), there are several China fakes on eBay and elsewhere but I don't really recommend those if your data is valuable to you. :)

External display not working on my T43

Am using T43 and I cannot display onto external monitor. Just recently upgraded to Win 7. Not sure if it is the OS or my display port having problem.

Anyone encounter the same thing after upgrading or can help with my problem?

If display port faulty, what are the ways to retify this? Changing MB?

Nothing compared to the time and effort spent troubleshooting the problem. I also have my reservations on the expertise at the Lenovo service center...read many threads of similar nature.

If the wireless card is Intel version. Upgrade the driver to latest. It was a Driver issue sometime back.
The next possible cause is the antenna wire is broken.

Is a simple problem but I really do not know why Lenovo need to take the trouble to the court.

@ aosw88 - Really sorry to hear about your situation and I won't be surprised if you lost your confidence with ThinkPads. I'm just curious why they did not try to change the antenna, motherboard or do a one-to-one replacement. The response from the IBM rep was typical and irresponsible tai-chi without any knowledge of the situation.

I hope Lenovo wakes up from this and improves their level of service, else their reputation of business-line ThinkPads is going to stink..i mean sink even lower. :(

Hi dskw,

Could you share how did you overcome the problem?

i just wrote a batch file to monitor the online connectivity. if the file detects that i do not have an IP (which means my wlan card d/c, as my router is on 24/7), then i use microsoft's devcon to restart the wlan card.

Hi to all,

i would like to share my experience with Lenovo customer care. In march 2010, I sent my IBM T61 laptop for servicing because it was having intermittent wireless disconnection. The laptop was then serviced on 3 more occasion but the problem persisted. Their service technician also encountered the problem onsite and couldn't rectify it. After that Lenovo claimed that the problem might be due to the router. I got Singtel service report to proof that the intermittent wireless disconnection was not due to the router. FYI, I got 4 computers at home including another IBM laptop which does not experience intermittent wireless disconnection. However, lenovo keep on arguing that it is the problem with the router. Lenovo refused to give me a refund or a new laptop.

I even got CASE to mediate with them but there was on outcome. In the end, I when to the Small claim tribunal court in Singapore and I was awarded $1100.00. I was only paid $1100 because I had used the laptop for 3 yrs but it was still under warranty. I paid $2600.00 for the laptop. This case proved that there was something wrong with the laptop and Lenovo refused to admit it until the case was presented to the registrar. I had received my cheque already. I had attached the court order below for you guys to see.

Upz leh you. Go all the way to small claim court. Respect you.

Just curious, does that mean they will keep the laptop after paying you in full?

Hi gohkhm,

They did replace the antenna once. I forgotten to include that in the draft. I mentioned to them that I suspect that it might be due to the motherboard. However, the questioned me how come I say that the problem might be due to the motherboard. I told them that since we have tried all the solutions and the only last resort is to replace the motherboard. But they refused to replace it. IBM does not have anymore set for a one-to-one replacement. The team leader even told me that they don't provide replacement set for laptop that are around 3 yr old according to their replacement guidelines. I asked her to email me their replacement guidelines. This was the reply that I got: "As spoken earlier, you have requested for the replacement guidelines for Lenovo. We are sorry, this is not possible as the Policy is strictly for internal use, and it is not to be shared with the public, even sentences of it. "

In the warranty entitlement, it states that IBM or your reseller, if approved by IBM to provide warranty service, will either, at its discretion, 1) repair it to make it function as warranted, or 2) replace it with one that is at least functionally equivalent. If IBM is unable to do either, you may return the Machine to your place of purchase and your money will be refunded.

Hence, IBM has the right to keep on trying to repair your laptop until you give up hope. Thats was what they did to me from March 2010 to September 2010 (6 months). Do take note that they may give you a used/old laptop. This was what CASE (Customer Association of Singapore) told me. Hence, I went to pursue for refund. The warranty entitlement was well crafted to their favor.

I feel for you man...really. If you are willing to give ThinkPads another shot, let me know, I'll get you one at cost.

Because Lenovo like all OEMs don't do the manufacturing like all OEMs after 3 years they no longer stock the boards the ODMs already moved on to new designs.

That is why I said built quality is as real as Santa Claus because nobody actually does the manufacturing it is all made in China (except Processors and Harddisk because Wafering facilities are only in selected place by Intel and AMD as well as Harddisk manufacturing plant). The mainboard is all made in China.

So if you are unlucky enough to get a set that was made by a tired, overworked worker in China Assembly plant who screwed up too bad.

If they so choose not to manufacture the part after 3 years. Then it will be only fair if they do not grant the product with 3 years warranty. Giving sutomer a 3 years warranty means it has a potential of spare parts replacement and hence they have a duty to stock up reasonable quantity to support the warranty claim.

There is no such thing as fairness if you haven't noticed
In this world money and power makes the rules.

It is purely profit driven that is why I don't fanboi companies like some iTurds.

Sold laptops has no income value they don't make any extra money from sold sets, so to reduce cost so their CEO/Shareholders can buy a new Ferrari they drop the old designs and take their chances with refurbished boards hoping it can meet the repair demands.

Boards are cheap only when manufactured in masses, in this case it is cheaper to "refund" TS rather than reproduce an obsolete board(Plus they get to use the "devaluation" policy to refund the cash that is why it is stupid to buy expensive laptops.).

It is not a environmentally friendly world as well, sell and dump, rinse and repeat.
