Hi all networking Gurus
I need some urgent advice please
Juz got a resale 3i HDB with a utility room behind
I'm gonna use that utility room as my entertainment/guitar room so basically all my PC, gadgets and stuffs will be in there.
Went to ViewQwest @ Suntec yesterday wanted to apply for the wifi mesh with Asus ZenWifi Mesh plan, but the guy adviced me not to apply 1st before laying cables.

So my concern is, am I able to install an FTP inside the utility room?
am I able to install 1 more FTP at my living room to cater for smart TVs, wireless sound systems etc etc ??
and even so, becoz of the structure of that utility room, when I close the door, the wifi outside will definitely be bad.
not to mention in the middle is my kitchen with alot of cabinets and stuffs, although is an open kitchen but I guess the Wifi will still be affected?
I attached a floorplan for better understanding.

Please help
Thanks all!

Just lay an ethernet cable to cover your utility room. Then connect a switch and Access Point to cover your intended devices; it should give good coverage even with the doors closed.

If you already have an existing FTP at the entrance, moving it costs about as much as laying a LAN cable anyway.

A 2nd FTP means you need a 2nd Internet plan, which isn't cost-effective.

Hi bro
Thanks for reply
My problem is
When the door is closed, there isn’t any holes to run the ethernet cable.
And the utility room walls cannot drill hole as they are thickened beams.
Unless I drill the hole on my door, which kinda defeats the purpose of being soundproof?

you no need to make a hole for the fibre cable if you want to put a ftp inside the room?

Yes I need to.
I juz double cfm with Netlink that its ok to install an FTP inside..
if you put ftp there. you still need to put lan cable to outside for your house internet outside the room. unless you signing up for 2 fibre plans..? (assuming you got 2 ftp in your home)

pulling lan cable into your room is more ideal. end point in your room can be a network switch, or AP with lan ports (or router in AP mode), etc etc.

FTP is free up to only certain metres to your house, if you want to lay the fibre all the way straight into your utility room it'll be at your own cost... it is like living rm + kitchen = 15m

you can terminate the CAT run at your door front then extend the rest of the run with flat type CAT cable which should slip through your door gap easily.

when was the upgrading done to add the utility room?

my parents' place (similar layout) was upgraded in the early 2000s (I think 2002) and the utility room has another telephone point added along with a SCV point.

If your utility room also has a telephone point, what you can do is to replace the CAT5 cable (used for telephone) with a CAT6 or CAT7 cable to terminate where the FTP will be and then change the RJ11 jack to a RJ45 jack. Then you can just leave the FTP in the original living room. If you still want to shift the FTP, you will need to contact Netlink Trust to shift as your house is likely following the old IMDA code which only allows NLT to shift the FTP.

the FTP point relocation could easily cost you $400- $500 (could be more if the contractor wants to chop you)

Another alternative is to run fibre patch cord (20 metres $20+) but take note cannot bend much, need to hack holes through the beams all the way till your kitchen. If FTP relocate too much cost can do this instead, buy the patch cord yourself then find a freelancer/contractor to lay.

if you door is the hinge type sure have gap can slip through the hinge side wat, no need to place underneath the door and your door can still open/close as normal.

hmm the question is though..
Am I able to drill holes through the beams?
I did contacted and confirmed with Netlink that they can install the FTP inside the utility room.
But thats only surface drilling to install the switch/plug
Drilling thoroughly through is another question.
Duno if HDB will come after me..
