Halo & Last Of Us Show Comparisons Addressed By Xbox Exec

As the HBO show continues to set new records, Xbox exec Phil Spencer addresses Halo and The Last of Us show comparisons. The former marked an adaptation of 343 Industries' action video game franchise revolving around engineered supersoldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 as he and other Spartan soldiers in the United Nations Space Command take the fight to the alien alliance known as the Covenant seeking to wipe out humanity. The Last of Us, meanwhile, is an adaptation of Naughty Dog's game of the same name following smuggler Joel and teenager Ellie as they venture through a post-apocalyptic United States with the potential cure for the zombie-like pandemic that ruined the world.

In a recent interview with IGN to discuss his company's 2023 plans, Phil Spencer was asked about recent Halo and The Last of Us show comparisons.

The Xbox executive confirmed he had heard the discussions of audiences comparing the adaptation of his console's beloved franchise and that of Sony's, feeling that while he wants the best for everyone and that The Last of Us is "fantastic", there are enough differences to make the discussion pointless. See what Spencer said in the video above and quote below:
I want the best for everything that we work on, Halo television series included. I think there's some differences there, but I don't think that the point of the question of, 'Hey, Last of Us is out there, setting an incredibly high bar. Should we all aspire to reach that same bar with the work that we do in television?' Absolutely. I could say the same thing in video games.

Why Halo Fans Were Let Down By Paramount+ Show

Where HBO's The Last of Us has garnered widespread acclaim for its faithfulness to its source material and its cast, Paramount+'s Halo was met with largely mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. One of the biggest points of criticism for the latter has been its diverting from the Halo games, namely with its depiction of Pablo Schreiber's Master Chief. Unlike the games, the Halo show came under fire right out the gate with the pilot episode for Master Chief removing his helmet by the end of the episode, something that never occurs in the source titles.

Can Halo Season 2 Fix Its Issues?

Despite the backlash, Halo earned itself a season 2 renewal ahead of season 1's premiere, leaving the hope for the next chapter of the show to fix its issues. Having previously cited the show as existing within the "Silver Timeline" separate from the games, 343 Industries exec Kiki Wolfkill has assured that the creative team behind the show will be listening to both the good and positive feedback of Halo season 1 as they headed into the writing process for season 2. Additionally, with the series already landing a new showrunner in the form of Fear the Walking Dead alum David Wiener, it could easily see a shift towards a more authentic adaptation of the games.

The one sign holding the show's future back, however, is that Halo season 2 is confirmed to see the return of Charlie Murphy's Makee, the Covenant-indoctrinated human who became a love interest for Master Chief as they both became the key to unlocking Forerunner technology. Considering much of the Halo season 1 backlash stemmed from their relationship in the show, both for its morally bankrupt nature of a prisoner of war sleeping with a soldier and its going against the games for Master Chief's lack of relationships, her return could be a sign that the show may be doomed to repeat the mistakes of its past. With filming currently underway, audiences will have to keep their eyes peeled for further updates on Halo season 2.

Henry Cavill to Star in Warhammer 40K Series for Amazon

While his time as the Man of Steel may have come to an end, Henry Cavill is already gearing up for his next project -- an adaptation of the popular miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill is attached to star in and executive produce a new series based on Warhammer 40K, which is currently in the works at Amazon. THR reports that Amazon is currently in "final talks" to acquire the rights to the game from owner Games Workshop following a competitive bidding war. No writers or showrunners are currently attached to the project, though Vertigo Entertainment is attached to executive produce alongside Cavill.

What Is Warhammer 40K?

Warhammer 40,000 -- also known as Warhammer 40K or simply Warhammer -- is a tabletop game introduced by Games Workshop in 1987. In it, players simulate battle using miniature models of warriors and vehicles. As its title implies, Warhammer 40K is set approximately 40,000 years in the future. The game's story revolves around a stagnant human society being antagonized by aliens and various supernatural creatures.

Warhammer 40K is largely considered to be the most popular miniature wargame in the world. That said, the game's most dedicated playerbase resides in the United Kingdom, its place of origin. (Notably, Cavill himself is a native of Saint Helier, Jersey.) Over the years, Warhammer has spawned numerous spinoffs and tie-ins, including other tabletop games, video games, music, novels, an animated film and comic books published by companies like Titan and Marvel. There have also been previous talks of a potential live-action series adaptation

Henry Cavill Has Hung Up His Cape as Superman

News of Cavill's involvement in Amazon's planned Warhammer series comes shortly after it came to light that the actor would no longer be portraying Superman in the DC Universe. The actor recently appeared as the Last Son of Krypton in Black Adam, ending a five-year absence from the role. Following Black Adam's premiere, Cavill officially announced that he was back as Superman, with a sequel to his 2013 solo film, Man of Steel, reportedly entering development.

However, Cavill's return came at a time when DC was undergoing a massive changing of the guard. Newly-appointed DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently confirmed that he is writing a new Superman film as part of his and Peter Safran's revamped DCU slate. The film will take place during an earlier point in the Man of Steel's life, and will not star Cavill. That said, Gunn and Safran have left the door open to potentially work with Cavill in the future.

"James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes," Cavill wrote in a statement addressing his DC departure. "...My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Cavill is also preparing to bid farewell to his role as Geralt of Rivia on Netflix's live-action series adaptation of The Witcher. After starring in the show's first two seasons, the actor is set to bow out following its third, which is expected to premiere in the summer of 2023. Liam Hemsworth will then take over the role of Geralt starting with Season 4

Ted Lasso Spinoffs Plan After Season 3

Hannah Waddingham addresses possible Ted Lasso spinoff plans following season 3. Based on a character originally created for a series of NBC Sports advertisements for their coverage of the Premier League, the Apple TV+ show stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular character, an overly positive American football coach hired to manage an English football team with no prior experience with the sport. The feel-good television comedy proved popular with critics and audiences, winning seven Emmy Awards during its first two seasons. With season 3 concluding Ted Lasso's central narrative, many have speculated how the franchise can continue.

Speaking with Deadline, Waddingham discussed potential Ted Lasso spinoff shows following season 3's conclusion. When asked if Waddingham's character, Rebecca Welton, will receive a spinoff series of her own, the actor responded, "No." However, she left the door open for future Rebecca stories, as well as stories for other characters, down the road. Read what she said below:
To be honest, I genuinely don’t know. And you never know how they’re going to splice the season together either. There’s the opportunity and the fodder for several of the characters to spin off in their own direction. And I think the characters are so beloved that it would be reasonable for them to do so. But I know for a fact that there’s no plans of anything like that at the moment. To be honest, I’m not even sure that at this moment Jason even knows what he wants to do.

What Could Ted Lasso Spinoffs Be About

Although Sudekis has repeatedly stated that Ted Lasso season 3 will end the arc initially planned for the character, the other characters have potential to carry their own shows. Apple TV knows they have an audience with the show and likely wants to hold onto them once season 3 concludes. This may leave room for potential spinoffs led by any of Ted Lasso's outstanding ensemble cast.

Nigerian right back Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) has captured the hearts of audiences around the world his endless optimism and charming personality. With Sam proving his loyalty to AFC Richmond at the end of season 2 by rejecting a lucrative deal to play in his home country, the character is ripe for his own spinoff. Additionally, Brett Goldstein's foul-mouthed retired player Roy Kent and Juno Temple's ambitious model and businesswoman Keeley Jones are also compelling characters to build the future of the franchise.

Ted Lasso can continue without Sudekis if the series were reframed. A possible season 3 conclusion could see former assistant coach and current West Ham United manager Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed) return to AFC Richmond and replace Lasso. The series could become an employment-focused sitcom, similar to Parks and Recreation or Abbott Elementary, centered around running a Premier League football club instead of focusing on the fish-out-of-water premise Ted Lasso is known for. This would allow all members of the cast to return and continue the Ted Lasso franchise indefinitely.

Every Video Game Movie & TV Show Adaptation In Development

Here are all the video game movie and TV adaptations that are currently in development. Video games are getting a resurgence in media as companies are gaining confidence in their performance. In 2020, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out as the highest grossing video game movie ever in the US - and Nintendo's Detective Pikachu released the year prior surpassed even Sonic in the worldwide box office. The Resident Evil franchise is still going, with November 2021 releasing the franchise's latest installment, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Also in November, Netflix released the beautifully animated Arcane: League of Legends series, that currently has a 100% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking it as one of 2021's best animated TV shows.

With the increasing popularity of many video game movie and TV adaptations, there are naturally a number of franchises with new installments currently in development. Video game adaptations are making their promotional rounds on the internet, with the untitled Mario movie getting a particularly loud response from audiences due to its unusual casting decisions. While responses to Chris Pratt voicing Mario were mixed, there's a lot of hype building around almost every currently announced video game adaptation

Here are all the video game movie and TV adaptations with a relatively high likelihood of being released. While many of the mentioned titles listed do not have a set date, production is going smoothly enough that a near-future release is likely, so long as production doesn't face any serious impediments from the likes of the COVID-19 pandemic or any other external forces.

Ridley Scott has been confirmed as one of the directors of this limited series, he is also producing this series on behalf of his Scott Free productions. Ridley Scott is known for directing the original Blade Runner movie released in 1982. He is mainly known as a producer these days, but his directing credits include films such as Alien, G.I. Jane, Gladiator, Hannibal, Body of Lies, The Martian, Alien: Covenant, and many others. He is also set to direct Gladiator 2, which will begin filming in May.

Blade Runner 2099 is currently set to kick off filming on July 17, 2023, in Belfast, Ireland, but if conflict happens due to Ridley Scott's schedule, it may change. As of now, we haven't heard of any such reports.

Jeremy Podeswa will be the other director of this series. Podeswa is best known for directing multiple episodes of HBO's hit series, Game of Thrones. He has directed a few episodes in Seasons 5, 6, and 7. Apart from Game of Thrones, he has also directed episodes of hit shows which include, The Handmaid's Tale, The Mosquito Coast, Station Eleven, Boardwalk Empire, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, True Detective, and many more. He is currently in production on Apple TV+ Series, The New Look.

Blade Runner 2099 is a limited series, so the episodes number can be anywhere between six to ten. Silka Luisa, who has written the script and executive producing the series, will act as the showrunner.

As the name suggests, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will be set 50 years after the events 2017 movie Blade Runner 2049. Jodie Comer has been rumored to lead this series, she recently appeared in The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott. Any other detail regarding the film is yet to be revealed officially including the cast, characters, and the number of episodes. The show will reportedly have a high budget and in terms of quality, it won't be any less than the 2017 film. Amazon is fast-tracking this series, which means the 2024 release is probably on the cards.

Blade Runner 2099 will be produced by Alcon Entertainment (The Expanse) in collaboration with Scott Free Productions and Amazon Studios. Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Michael Green, Ben Roberts, Cynthia Yorkin, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, and Marina Brackenbury are also executive producers on this one-season limited series

'Assassin's Creed' Series Loses Showrunner Jeb Stuart [Exclusive]

Collider's own Steven Weintraub had the opportunity to talk with Stuart about Vikings: Valhalla for Season 2 where he also asked if he was still working on Assassin's Creed, to which Stuart said he is "no longer involved" in the project. Weintraub followed up with an inquiry about what led to the separation between the two parties, asking if it was a "difference in vision." Stuart elaborated, saying:

"I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that's fair. I know it's going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it's a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides."

The original announcement of the Netflix series was made back in September 2022 during the Ubisoft Forward Livestream when the series was described as an "epic, genre-bending live-action adaptation" by Marc-Alexis Côté, VP Executive Producer of Assassin's Creed, though the finer details of the series' plot haven't been revealed. The series is still in early development with Ubisoft Film and Television producing the show alongside Netflix. The new showrunner for the series has not yet been revealed. This Netflix series will be the third live-action adaptation of Assassin's Creed following Assassin's Creed Lineage, a short film released to promote Assassin's Creed II, and 2016's theatrical feature film adaptation simply titled Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fassbender.

The live-action Assassin's Creed series on Netflix is currently in early development. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates on the video game adaptation. You can check out the trailer for Assassin's Creed Mirage down below and look for more from our exclusive interview with Jeb Stuart soon

‘True Blood’ Reboot Officially Dead at HBO Max

HBO has canceled the reboot of True Blood, TV Line has reported. The series was in development since December 2020 with Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa attached as executive producer and co-writing the script with Jami O’Brien. Furthermore, Alan Ball, who created the original True Blood was set to return as executive producer. Per HBO and HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys, the series is dead because “nothing… felt like it got there.”

In February 2021, Bloys noted that there was “no green light imminent on” the reboot though the series had “a writer working on an idea for sure, but I think that it’s fair to say it’s not quite as far along as people think. It’s [not] coming on the air next year. It’s a long way away from that.” Further adding, “We’ll have to see how it comes together. Like with any development, you want to see [if] it [is] a story worth telling. Is it engaging? Does it add to the original? And we’ll see.” Seems like the premium network finally moved on from the reboot given it currently holds fan-favorite titles like The Last of Us and House of the Dragon.

The original fantasy drama was a smashing hit for the network enjoying a seven-season long run. Based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries, a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the original series followed Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, who falls in love with a 174-year-old vampire Bill Compton. The series was different from other vampire-based settings as, in the True Blood universe, an invention of a synthetic blood product branded "Tru Blood" allowed vampires to "come out of the coffin" and let their presence be known to mankind which creates its own kind of problems while the vampires' struggle for equal rights and assimilation. Many fans had their own interpretations of the themes of the series which made it quite popular.

All seasons of True Blood are available on HBO Max

“Helltown” – Oscar Isaac in Talks to Star in Serial Killer Thriller

Fresh off an Oscar win for All Quiet on the Western Front, director Ed Berger is on board to direct and executive produce a limited serial killer series titled “Helltown,” Deadline reports.

Additionally, Oscar Isaac (“Moon Knight”) is attached to star in the series, as well as executive produce. “Helltown” is based on the same-titled book from Casey Sherman.

The eight-episode Amazon Studios series comes from showrunner Mohamad El Masri (Severance), and Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey.

Deadline details, “Helltown centers on Kurt Vonnegut (Isaac) before he was a renowned author and cultural lightning rod. In 1969 Kurt was a struggling novelist and car salesman living life with his wife and five children on Cape Cod.

“When two women disappear and are later discovered murdered underneath the sand dunes on the outskirts of Provincetown, Kurt becomes obsessed and embroiled in the chilling hunt for a serial killer and forms a dangerous bond with the prime suspect.”

New Scream TV Show Chances Addressed By Scream 6 Producer

The chances of actually getting a Scream TV show look good, according to the Scream VI producers. Scream VI has already been a massive success and is currently dominating the box office with its $43 million opening take. With interest in Scream as high as ever, expanding the scope of Scream seems to be an inevitability.

While the slasher franchise has enjoyed a show before, the series ended in 2019 and has so far shown no signs of renewal. While the Scream showrunners have revealed their plans for what seasons 3 and 4 could have looked like, they will never actually be realized. Still, Scream VI producer William Sherak revealed to Deadline that there is a possibility of another Scream show being developed. Check out his quote below:

"In success, I think what Kevin and Wes created in Ghostface, because anybody can wear the mask, it kind of gives you the ability to have unlimited stories, right? You’re not trying to figure out how to keep one specific character alive. It’s always somebody new, so you have the ability to keep going. I will tell you, if they let us, we would love to. I think that’s kind of the answer. The benefit that Paul and I [have] that a lot of people don’t have is…a genius partner who happens to be a writer... Not everybody has the luxury of the office next door being held by somebody who actually sits with a whiteboard and creates ideas out of nowhere.
"So, we have that going for us that a lot of companies don’t. We don’t have to go outside to find that, and we are fortunate that Jamie, with Guy Busick — who we’ve done a ton of stuff with, and will continue — picked up that mantle when Gary Barber let us run with Scream for Spyglass…So, we have the benefit [that] in success, which we will continue to knock on wood and hope it happens, we don’t have to go keep finding people to tell these stories. It’s an in-house thing we get to build with Spyglass that I think gives us a leg up. I think [that] allows you to have a singular vision of how we want to control the world, so when you talk about TV and all that other stuff, any of that’s possible because we don’t have to go outside and find it. It’s all sitting here, should the opportunities arise."

Could A New Scream TV Show Work?

Unfortunately, Scream: The TV Show was never truly able to live up to the expectations of the movies. Often filled with teen drama that pales in comparison to the films, it also bogs itself down with a smaller budget and less interesting characters. Yet it is worth revisiting the series or making a new one, given that Scream VI is beating Creed III at the box office. That, alone, is proof that Scream's name still carries some serious weight.

Breaking Bad, House of the Dragon, and The Last of Us have proven that TV is more than capable of countering movies and providing blockbuster-quality content for the small screen. A well-made Scream show can do the same. With episodes devoted to different areas of the world that are dealing with the Ghostface menace, a Scream TV series can offer something new, while also clinging to the parts of the franchise that make it so beloved.

The movies themselves are proving that core characters are no longer as essential to the series as they may have initially seemed. Even the Ghostface killer's identity is no longer entirely important, since anyone can pick up the mask and terrorize the world. If given the same care and attention that the Scream movies have enjoyed, a Scream TV show certainly has the opportunity to blow the movies out of the water.

Don't think it will work for TV. The fun of the franchise is largely in its self-deprecating humour.
