iPhone 12 with that bigger camera... Try somewhere bottom-right of cam area, hold it there for a few seconds and see what it says on the screen. It should be somewhere there, hold it steady for a while especially if you happen to have a case there.
When I used the EZ-Link app in my iPhone XS Max to top up my EZ Link card, it'd always ask me to scan the card which I did.
Try this... Once you've estimated the position, stop moving the phone for a while and see if it detects your card. Having come from an Android being my primary phone, I've noticed my old iXSMax isn't as sensitive. Have to slow down as it takes more effort/time. I thought it's my iPhone that's ready to be replaced...
Yes, Apple Wallet, MRT, bus, TraceTogether, etc, still sensitive. Just EZ Link doesn't seem to work well with iOS.

I've never tried FlashPay before... With EZ Link cards, I've to get them entered into the app first. That is, I cannot help friends reload as their cards aren't in my app.

Oh, we can reload with the app then! Come to think of it, I've a forgotten EZ Link charm that's a FlashPay, forgotten because the number wasn't accepted in the EZ Link app. Out of sight, out of mind.
