Just joined the J3 club after my S9's power switch broke... AGAIN XD (this time without warranty... haiz).

Prices (all in SGD) below are for the J3 32GB model.

In case anyone's interested, amazon's the cheapest, selling for ard $360 excluding shipping (note no GST as <$400). Alternatively, some reputable ebay sellers are selling it for $390-$400 with free shipping.

Locally, I bought mine from Medaka (SLS) for $460.

Hai Siew (SLS) sells for a little cheaper than that, ard $440+(?), but they didn't have stock. Be aware that if you ask for quotes, they usually exclude GST to lure you to come down and buy, so be sure to ask them for the FULL PRICE, inclusive of everything.

AVOID Farle (quoted $479) and Fumiyama (quoted $520, wth).

I would advise importing from amazon if you don't need the really short 1-yr warranty, and don't mind the 2-week wait. Ebay is also a good alternative, and you'll get the product in a week or less (free expedite shipping) for $10-$20 more. Otherwise, get it locally from Hai Siew.

Here are my initial impressions for the J3 vs my previous S9.

I'm impressed by the new UI, design etc (GREAT improvement over the S9), but as for the SQ, its more a step sideways than forwards.

Equipment used --> JH13 and Rooth 8-drivers, unamped, flat EQ (I'm a purist)

First, let me say that the two sound really, really similar and this probably won't matter to most casual music listeners.

In general, the J3 has a more "forward" presentation as compared to the S9, which sounds more neutral in comparison (sometimes associated with boring). Vocal performances get a little extra oomph from the extra clarity and sound slightly better. Problem is that orchestral/instrumental pieces suffer from a smaller soundstage (due to more forward vocals), and the subtler instruments are harder to pick out as a result. These are rather subtle differences though.

Overall, the J3 is still the best mp3 player in the market as of now.

Got a simple screen protector off ebay (made for cowon j3) for around 12-13 bucks. Good alternative. Got one of their case protectors too.
