maybe u can post ur itinerary here so we know what u have already included? since a lot of places are closed on 1st jan, maybe u can visit shrines, parks and gardens? major dept stores may be open as well.

:( i got confused with the other posters. pai seh. but i think 30 dec shld still be better than 1st jan for disney.

maybe asakusa/odaiba switch to 1st jan instead? odaiba seems to be opened.

Visiting Japan during New Year

will it be alright if i reach disney at around 1-2? will it be enuff time for me to explore the disneysea?

is it good to plan just shinjuku and shibuya on the 31st?? most stores are still open on the 31st dec right?

then either swap 30th dec with 1st jan's disney sea with odaiba/asakusa, but then i scare after visiting fish market no time to go disneysea...

2nd jan i'll be departing to kyoto, but havent choose morning or evening...

I don't think you want to head to Tsukiji before Disneysea. Disneysea queue is notoriously long even if you are there before they open. Guessing you're heading to Tsukiji for the sushi at one of the famous 2 (Dai or Daiwa), you probably will be done by 10 at the earliest even if you're the first wave to eat?

see what time he intends to go there ba. that time i finished daiwa at 6.45am. says walk around the market, will be done by 8+am latest? sushi dai will need to queue longer though.

tsukijishijo station -> maihama 30 mins
maihama -> disneysea 10 mins

anyway, try to buy the tix b4hand and utilize your fastpass well. (this one you ask the other experts here.)

decided to give up disney sea as we think that it may not be a fruitful trip for us to visit during that day, here's my latest 4th day - jan 1st 2015 itinerary...

due to limited rooms, we had to change hotel on 1st jan.

wanna be very slack, and since most shops closed on 1st jan, we decide to chill alot, and plan on the spot what to do after checking-in at the hotel :)

suggestion/advise still welcome!

jan1 ameyoko will be pretty dead, most stores will be closed (since families do their grocery shopping a few days before in prep for new year's). if you really wanna do your hatsumode on the stroke of midnight then go ahead, but be prepared to squeeze with a lot of people+in the dark, which isnt really fun. maybe do ueno on dec31 and your hatsumode on 1jan?

hmm if that's the case just go ahead. there are temples/shrines within/near Ueno park as well. You can go to the shrine again to take in the carnival fair atmosphere (there will be many stands selling food/etc)

winter sun set around 4:30pm. By 3pm u already can see the daylight is dimming. Your nara park excursion will have to wrap up by 3.30pm max I guess. Start you day earlier to catch the fast setting sun.

Dont know Nara leh. probably after 4pm you should head back to Kyoto bah. Over there Gion, Nishiki, Teramachi etc still can visit in the evening, but they wont stay open for too long. Maybe visit an Izakaya at Pontocho, and stroll along the Kamogawa? Or maybe take a dip in a nearby onsen?
