5G hotspot in Nagasaki on my IPhone 14, tethered it to my Ipad to download 1gb+.

Worked out better than the Simba on my wife's Samsung, which required an APN reset and hard reboot to revive 12 hours after landing. The same sim card worked fine on my spare phone in October.

It's a shame their rates for the rest of Asia is so terrible. Looks like changi recommends still better for ASEAN travels.

Update for Ubigi

When taking Shinkansen, some areas no Internet even though it shows 3/4 bars. There's a ! at the symbols. This ! also happens for my Starhub roaming so it's not just Ubigi problem. Could be a Docomo prob as both were using this network.

The areas are usually in between the cities so should be common. You can also use their WiFi instead

on Simba, u mean roaming only works 12h after landing in japan?

That particular $25 roaming Simba sim I brought over from a previous roaming trip to Japan in October. It worked 10 mins after landing in Japan that time. The plan was properly renewed and I swapped it into my wife's new phone while in SG.

Could be user fault, could be simba settings, maybe it could have been solved if it were me, or could have taken 12 hours for the network to sync. My wife couldn't be bothered to figure it out and just tethered off my ubigi for that first day.

I got a main $10 simba sim I use for my ipad and it worked without a glitch on both Japan trips and Malaysia.

Yeah I noticed that on the Narita express too.

Especially the underground portions near Tokyo stations and tunnels in Chiba. Could be no one bothered to install repeaters in tunnels, since JR offers free wifi for all passengers on Limited express and shinkansen.

Ubigi is good value if your phone has e-sim. In some phones, the user can switch between LTE and 5G as their prioritized connection. I would recommend switching to LTE if you find that your phone has difficulty maintaining connection to the network. (To me) the minor tradeoff in speed is more than compensated by the near 100% connectivity uptime.

Yes. I set up and paid for the Japan pass before I left. It was a 30 day pass so I had excess time to spare. It didn’t charge any extra for “roaming in sg”. The 30 days start from purchase and data counts only when I landed in Japan.

Theoretically can buy other pass for sg and M’sia but the rates for those are lousy.

Yes totally works.
anyway, youtrip works for anywhere that accepts Mastercard.
The only time it doesnt work is when you need to use a credit card for deposit. Ie. Hotel deposit.

Probably can but also means they not concerned with making it a priority. Makes the 50gb overkill.
Personally rather just spend the $ on 2 sim cards so can keep in communication if separated.

Ah that's cool.

On the other hand, for Simba do make sure you top up at least 2 days before renewal date. I topped up on renewal date and one of my card didn't reactivate until after I came back to Singapore. Which wasn't so bad because it was for my ipad.
