JCS japanese classes

hi. i learnt at JCS elementary at year 2007 till 2nd term then i stop le. do i need to restart everything and register again? and also at what level would i be able to take JLPT 4? i know that u can self study and u can take anytime. but if i m studying at JCS. need to study till Intermediate to be sufficient or...? coz if i remembered correctly, they mentioned there is Elementary 2 but on the webbie there is only Elementary. I am super confused. Any help?

Is ikoma better or JCS? den can continue the nxt half at JCS ma? hi aprilkwan san,

u took the (1 year) JCS elementary class till 2nd term?
-> then u may need to ask the staff for advance standing in order to allow you to join the current classes...
-> or i would advise you to join the intensive elementary (6 month) classes that are starting soon

JLPT 4 in JCS require half of the knowledge learnt in Intermediate class (B class) in order to take JLPT 4.

so i would advise you if u wanna take JLPT 4 this december, u may wanna try taking the Intensive Elementary class together with the JLPT 4 Prep class in JCS which of course u have to self study for JLPT 4 to make up of the knowledge required. I can recommend a JLPT 4 book which i used for self study if u require...

i took the intensive elementary class in JCS in 2007 from Jan - June, then i took the JLPT 4 prep class in JCS from July - November (and self study of course)

currently i am taking intermediate class in JCS and Basic class in IKOMA.

from my point of view and after reading Hougang Jap school syllubus, i would say Hougang is a good school.

in terms of which is better (IKOMA or JCS), i would say the approach is different for both schools...
IKOMA has a very balanced approach toward full proficiency of the language while JCS has a more written approach...

JCS uses the self-compiled white book for elementary and intermediate classes while IKOMA uses the elementary and intermediate "Minna no Nihongo" textbooks respectively...

Sorry, I do not know Nakamura Sachie Sensei, is she from JCS?

Ah keong-san you'r right to say i m taking the (one year) elementary, which i have only taken until end of second term. But i was thinking even if i get to join the 3rd term current classes, i won't be able to get the JCS cert to proceed for the first half of Intermediate Level right? -> their T&C stated at least 3/4 of Level completed and to pass the JCS school examination.

wow. i have the lendendary white book. but i think it will be even more priceless and legendary if u translate for us. so chim that i never bother reading it! dont mind me asking JLPT 4 need to study until which page of the white book? hee. & what JLPT book do you recommend?

But after reading this thread, i feel regretted coz u guys are having so much fun there! hehe. I chose Hougang coz is cheaper and won't be bonded to my co.

You have seen the Hougang syllabus before? Is it the Elementary so called 'textbook'?
I didn really like it coz the teacher wasn't organised in teaching so i guessed it spoils the whole learning process.

Anyway why are u learning in two schools? u want to have a taste of IKOMA too? =p

if you had join the intensive elementary class in january, then you will be able to join the intensive intermediate class in july and able to go for JLPT 3 this december...

no problems, i aiming to provide my notes and explanation on the white book because i have recieve various comments on the book and my way of helping fellow japanese beginners in learning jap more effectively in JCS...

since u are not going to JCS, i won't recommend to use the JCS book as it is designed and geared for JCS internal usage...

maybe the hougang jap sensei new bah, give her / him some time yah...

i study in IKOMA is because i am partially sponsored and was 'forced' to study there by my friend...

i recommend this JLPT 4 book which i have used in 2007.

So sorry for the late reply. went for the hougang class today. my teacher is teaching super fast. my friends cant catch up man. LOL.

U mean if i finish the intermediate class i would be able to take JLPT 3? so fast? coz u mentioned i need to complete 1/2 of intermediate level before i am equipped with the knowledge for JLPT 4.

comments on the book? i think it looks difficult. Plus my sensei seldom use the white book unless is for listening when i was still studying in JCS. Is it only my class? How about your Elementary & Intermediate class?

yup, the gap between JLPT 3 and JLPT 4 is not much...

With JCS full intermediate class knowledge plus some JLPT self study, u are able to sit for JLPT 3 this year..

petite sensei... most of the good sensei left.. this sensei isnt bad, but the materials and stuff learnt are much harder and cannot get into my brain anymore..

Just interest for jap, no particular aim, feeling a pity if i drop out now..

Overall, i think it's very important to do self-revision, if not, you won't be able to catch up. Regardless of what class you are studying in... A general gauge

JLPT 4: 3-4 hours of self study per week
JLPT 3: 6 hours of self study per week
JLPT 2: Everyday at least 2 hours of self study
JLPT 1: Everyday at least 2-3 hours of self study

even now, i am forcing myself to go for extra classes so that i am really studying, rather than lazing around.

anyway does the sensei in JCS teach differently? for those who have attended JCS classes before, how does the teacher teach.. is it through that legendary white book lesson by lesson?

for mine in yr 2007 when i took elem 1, my sensei, nakamura sachie used her own notebook and copy everything on the whiteboard while she teaches...even though she didn't speak much, but her notes are super easy to understand and i think that is the most important!

wondering if all the teachers have a standardized notebook for teaching in JCS or maybe just nakamura sensei has her own secret manual?

i think she is not there anymore so i don't know how the other teachers are like and their teaching techniques... i m more of a person who need notes than practising

i dislike those teachers who just talk and talk and we have to make notes.. if they speak too fast i think i might miss what they said and i m slower in absorbing when someone just plainly explain rather than drawing out and giving examples... .

Based on my experience at JCS elementary back in 2001 and currently (decided that I need a refresher course so as to facilitate pursuing Jap further after so long), I think that different teachers teach differently. Most tend to follow the legendary white book word for word, right down to the exact same example sentences given in it. Some try to group what needs to be taught in a more organized fashion for their classes and supplement additional materials/examples at their own initiative. A rare few (maybe 1 or 2? ) ignore the white book plainly and opt to teach in their own manner, referring to the white book only on occasions.

Most of the teachers I've encountered so far tend to go through the lesson points at a slow pace that's easy for the class to 'digest' with a couple of examples to practice on along the way. I guess what bothers some of my classmates at times are the various expressions that our teacher will mumble to herself from time to time since they have no idea as to what she could be mumbling about. Force of the habit I guess. Hee... ^^
