Tried the new JH twin, Layla and Angie, yesterday. Very surprised (pleasantly) that the twins are a departure from the usual JH house sound that Jerry is so famed for.
My impressions as below, DAP used is DX100 with FLAC and WAV files.
Layla: Tonality is natural, open and slightly meaty. What strike me on first listen is the Hifi signature; the scale is grand and very un-iem like. Soundstage is extremely wide and deep, other than Fitear 435, is among the widest I've heard. Clarity is excellent.
Bass is deep and impactful. Mids is natural and beautifully rendered, and is so ever slightly forward sounding. Treble is well extended and generally smooth, but I can see why some might have issues with sibilance.
Angie: Tonality is slightly brighter compared to Layla. Still open sounding, but more neutral in a monitoring way. Soundstage is considerably narrower than Layla, but she still manages impressive depth. Clarity is excellent, as with Layla.
With Angie, bass is lighter in both quantity and impact, though still very enjoyable. Mids is cleaner and slightly more forward than Layla. Treble is quite extended, but crucially slightly smoother than Layla, thus, sibilance is reduced and is less likely to be an issue for most people.
The JH twins both have HUGE shells. Fit is ok with Angie, but with Layla, it's slightly uncomfortable.
Prat on both Layla and Angie remains rather quick as you would expect from JH, but the basic signature has changed. The twins, though still sounding very slightly raw, has gained much more refinement compared to past models.
Friends around me know JH is not my favourite brand. Personally, I've always felt that JH lacks refinement that I look for in my IEMs.
That has changed today.
I have found the first JH that I can truly I say I like. Her name is Layla.
