7-Eleven Run

Wasn’t expecting much going into the race since never specifically trained for 10km. Idea was to start at Sub 40 pace and see how it goes. The only struggle was after 6km and the only person in front of me was Nichole with a 40-50m gap. If not for her, I will surely have bonked real hard. When my watch beeped 10km, I thought it was over but a 200m plus upslope awaited us. Oh well

Strava said my official 10km PB is 39:17 but official course results is 40:43. The journey to hit Sub 40 continues haha.

Also just to update, I got the cycling socks recommended by @xllms , they are thin, comfortable. Issue is too long for my liking as I pref quarter length but is still ok. Haven't tried for long run yet tho

When you join a marathon race that is in a high altitude, and you body is slow to acclimatize. Bring oxygen tank?

don't mean to pour cold water. SRY's best 5k timing on the roads is 15m 8s set in UK in 2024. 14m 36s on track in 2026. i believe.
imho unrealistic to target 5km under 15 on a road run in Singapore heat and humidly. Going under 18m or 17m is a great feat by itself irregardless of age.

In my experience, 17-18 mins fitness range actually not super super difficult to train for. The good thing about 3-5k is that it's not terribly difficult to recover from, good for our schedules and lifestyles here in SG.
Also, in a related way, not so easy to burn out compared to the 2 long distances that hobbyists like to play.

But the heat issue is real when running fast. Really need to actively douse ice cold water. For me, i do overheat significantly and experience very uncomfortable symptoms once past 7-8k (that time when i was playing 10k). So need to pull out all those cooling tricks.3
edit - of coz, still, when compared to HM/FM distances, 5k or even 10k really no comparison coz with 5k you still can outrun and tahan the extreme thermal failures that would plague FM over here in SG. ie heat is really the true limiter then for the super long distances.

Anyway, i gave up 10k after a while, other than being more heat affected compared to shorter distances, you also need much time and mental focus for the over distance runs lah...which for me is super monotonous and i tend to drift out. Coz i mainly enjoy running / TT fast and short and sweet, plus the longevity focus so makes less sense to go long distance.

I remember this girl from Ukraine. Totally not adapted to the heat index here

Shortish 5k racewalk (something like a 7-7.5km run? finish timings around 22 mins range) also cannot during Youth Olympics here in SG, at Bishan stadium late afternoon

They did have water on the 4th lane, but not sure if iced water or not. :ROFLMAO:

edit - actually not only her, the others also quite affected.

So, not a fitness issue, really can drop due to thermal limits.

That time Jessica Learmonth here in T100 Singapore also, her debut race here in 2015.

She was leading then once off the bike and on the run (less airflow cooling )....... BAM. Over the thermal limit. I still remember seeing her struggle at the promonitory as i was shuttling between the race village and promonitory. No more podium place for her. (seems like she finished 13th)

Then both also BTH over thermal limit.
Both DNF

Most sayang is Taylor knibb DNF just 2 miles from the FM finishing line.

BTW, let me clear up the air a bit over here. I am sure some would misunderstand and see it in another way.

18 mins 5k, you can train for it with just 4hrs a week. Or give it 5-6hrs, be generous a bit, decent chance of that happening, just a matter of time. Have even seen as little as 1.5-2h a week / 16-20km a week but of coz those are outliers mainly youngsters. Might take a while, as in 3-4 years even 5, but there is a good chance it can happen, less some stuff like if you are super genetically limited in your VO2max for some wierd reason then LL, for eg you are already age 70 to quote an extreme eg.

18 mins is approx like a 3hr FM. For eg, use JD to calcu
Try training for a 3hr FM with just 4h/wk. Heck the 1 single long run is going to eat nearly all of that up.

Then it is not even a fitness or talent or even genetics/aging issue already, it is a schedule issue that you can commit in your spare time for the hobby after fufilling your work and family commitments. If one can't even squeeze out that amt of training time in the first place, then it 100% definitely isnt going to happen.

i get where you are coming from. But will also say folks all got different hearts, hopes and aims.
My only wish is for people to find an exercise they enjoy and make it a life long habit instead of being influence by the current trend or how fast or how strong one needs to be measured up to be.
Cheers and Adios.

This place is good for liked minded people to discuss their journey. Different goals, but same race. BYD marathon. We used to have a more active running thread here where every SCSM particpants will post their long runs of the week, counting down, to peak phase, and to race.

The legendary runners from the tribe in Tarahumara . They were introduced to the world from the popular book "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall.

Thanks but still prefer to have a sub 40 with official results.

Anyway, Decathlon HM route is out. Got Sheares bridge and free SIS gel at 12km.
