Ran the marathon in Phuket this morning. Not an easy race but I tried to maintain a consistent pace throughout. Overall pleased with my performance.

how do you balance running faster/longer distance with building up muscles ?
What sales advise is correct. 10km is your ideal race distance stopping point. You could try 21km, but it’s not advisable to do long runs beyond 14-15km.

This guy did his first HM, running a time of 1.20. Longest run was 13km before. A lot of factors to consider is that he did this in Korea (better weather), was ex military regular and firefighter. He mostly runs short distance intervals, not many reps but very fast pace.

With this in mind, how to go about it?

Do short distance explosive intervals. 400s/200s, focus on speed. Long rest (2-3min), short reps (6-8 sets). Cut down on the rest over time, keep the pace the same. You run this at your 2.4km pace. Slowly scale up to 5km pace and do 800s. Similar 6-8 sets.

Don’t really need to go beyond that, since you will spend too much time running. This is the most efficient gains where your speed work will translate up to long distance and not losing muscle mass.

Can I ask some questions ?

Is it true that for those sales shoes which are old model, the sole is already deteriorated and will not last that long since it's had been kept for quite a long time ?

How much of a distance should you train for HM ? I got different answers when googling. Some said if you can run 10K, then should be no problem but some said 15K or the more the better 🤔
I remember back in 2019 bought my Clifton 6 at FULL price $180. Lasted 410 km. My Endorphin Shift 2 (2 year old stock) run until this year lasted 402 km. Price: $75. Old stock new stock no difference to me. My Reebok harmony road 3 and original floatride already 4 years old and still perform well.

As long as it's still in good condition and doesn't caused any injury should be fine.

You also have Reebok forever floatride. The outsole is so far the best in longevity. 1700km in it, and not counting the walks. It was still 100% outsole coverage when I retired it. Midsole have not touch the ground yet. the upper got one hole liao, Can stili wear but I got to give some mileage to the newer shoes, so retire. Quite a waste that RSH stop bringing them in. I must say the cushion is still not dead yet.

8-10k is optimal. Workout, eat enough food/proteins.

Beyond 15k is wasting the muscle gains. Workout, lose muscles. Workout lose muscles.

Perhaps it's possible with strict diet and discipline. But diminishing returns based on my experience.

Somemore after doing 15-21k, lesser time and energy left for workouts.

Last time when I did the longer runs, was still athletic build muscular but definitely not as well-cut as the 8k stage.

Could try as Kuudere suggested and do a Half for kicks.

I'm going to incorporate more of those intervals into my runs.

Been doing 10ks lately then left with less time/energy for workouts. Getting old. 😅
Are you opened to supplements? Creatine has make my recovery faster.
