Overseas running news

Grant Fisher, olympic bronze medallist (5/10k): 18 mile (29km) long run at 5.22 min/mile (8 minute-flat 2.4km) pace @ 142 bpm >> Basically, easy run for him is 8- minute 2.4k pace.

Marco Arop, olympic silver medallist (800m): Ran the HM in 1:11 with 48km/week mileage. He will be tackling 1.5km competitively in 2025.

Paul Chelimo, former olympic silver/bronze medallist (5k): Ran marathon debut time in 2:18, not scaling very well into the marathon unfortunately. His first marathon was actually US olympic trials but didn't complete. This is his official time: https://worldathletics.org/competition/calendar-results/results/7208003?eventId=10229634&gender=M

Alex Yee, olympic triathlon gold medallist: Will be running the London Marathon, aims to run 2:07 - 2:10. Current mileage is 96km/week. But will be scaling up to 144km/week in the lead-up to marathon.

Looks like some athletes are transiting to something out of their specialty. Quite a few eventually give up, especially those who transit to full marathon, coz the marathon elite level standard is too high liao. Really need that X factor even be among the sub 2:04 club. Winners in world class are usually sub 2:05. For ALex Yee, goal seems realistic for him. Hope not to sound racist, but I think skin color matters. LOL

I am just curious how fast does he take to run 96km/week because he still needs to balance running with swimming and cycling.

I think his training must be very efficient, in order to juggle all three sports.

Yes, and it's a lifetime opportunity to try those distances out at peak fitness, even though the transition is very difficult. For Yee, I don't remember him running a HM before. He has ran fast 10ks previously, but will be jumping into marathon straight. Also, he mentioned that his weekly mileage is insufficient to aim for top times.

My guess is that he wants to give marathon a go and perhaps go back to dominating triathlon since he is a winner there.

But I believe HM will suit pro triathletes a lot more. Morgan Pearson, US olympic triathlete ran the Valencia HM as the fastest american at 1:01:08.

Yee can really run HM very fast with that weekly mileage.

Speaking of triathletes, I wonder how fast Ben Khoo will be if he focussed fully on running

The current record is 2:11:25. I am guessing 2:08-2:10. Somewhere close to olympic record. And that timing will be bad especially if it's their first year running in Sg. Subsequent attempts might be better.

Ben Khoo would be different from Yee, since he is more of ironman guy.

Yee is more of short triathlon.

Also, Yee got no experience in running a marathon.

Ben Khoo, could be faster but I think the difference would be less significant.

That being said, if Shaun Goh really focus on marathon races, he could give SRY a run for the $. Especially basing on his recent Valencia HM performances.

Agree about Shaun, I was just super surprised Ben finished only 19s behind SRY this year.

SRY even said this in his reply: "Surged at 27k? I slowed down to wait for you man (see strava), you just went to sleep for 2km before the biggest second wind I’ve ever seen"

SRY wasn't trying hard, just there to win first place. So, I don't think the time difference is all that accurate.

Third guy, Richard Heng, is an up and coming runner though. Still attending uni but 3rd place. I wouldn't put his potential to be better than Jon Lim/Shaun Goh if either of them go into serious marathon running.

This is what retirement is like.. Become ambassador, do friendly run. If I had known he is doing that pace in Thailand, I would have spend an air tix there to run that 10km race and pace with him all the way, and hopefully some nice photo from those race photographers. LOL.. Once in a life time can really do pacing with the GOAT.

Just to share, Puma currently having their end of season sale. 40% off their Deviate Nitro series. Deviate Nitro Elite 3 only left womens while Deviate Nitro 3 still have mens for selected sizes. Got a pair of Deviate Nitro 3 at the physical Puma shop where they display only 20% off but if you show them the price on their website they will do a price match aka $143.40.
