No need run at Z3 I feel. Juz Z1 for the entire long run (keep to 2 hours) should be fine, or juz add some Z4 intervals inside. Alot of difference I feel when you run Z1 Vs Z2. Like that you machiam running an actual marathon alr at Z3/Z4.
Now going to start adding more time for long run . Every week will add 15 mins until I am able to run non-stop 3.5 hours. I guess by then I will automatically slow down to Z1/Z2 heart rate.

r u referring to HR or pace for the mentioned zones?
for me, running without walking in Z2 HR is even more challenging than running in Z3/4 HR

Quite true also. 99% of my running . I just ran as normal as I feel. Ended up I tend to go faster than I planned..even I told myself must slow down and buy then feel uneasy to control the pace

Just curious what are the real benefit of running a marathon or run for many hours?

At my age i only think of high cortisol, calcium loss, muscle loss, strained muscle/tendon, worn joints, inflammation, exhaustion and dehydration.

Health wise, nothing additional if you are already consistent in exercises, doing you 80 easy 20 hard a week. . For some like me, without a goal, I probably nuah and become a true blue BBFA. I need these goals to be consistently active. I have been thru phases for exercising for health, for passion, none really give me the discipline for being consistent than having a goal to achieve. One thing for those who do a few marathons over the years and actually put in the time to train, their metabolic health especially insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility are top notch. Thanks to health of the mitochondria cells.

Muscle loss, calcium loss can be mitigated thru proper refuelling and hydration during long runs. Easy run days, hardly a concern, only the long runs of more than 1.5 hours. Marathoners may look skinny in proportion, but their lean muscle makes up most of the girth and the girth is not small. I wear large or X-L for calves and thigh sleeves and no fats there.
Strained tendon and muscle are training error, too much, too fast, too soon. DO it right, these organs actually gets more resilient than most people. just like the knee. Training error destroy the runners knee, do it right, the knee is actually very resilient. I never wear knee braces since I started running 17 years ago. I would attribute it to base building with easy or filler runs. Seasoned trail runners probably has the most resilient legs due to uneven grounds and elevation.

I believe the real benefits are the excitement and environment of the events.

If you are discipline enough, you don't need such events to drive you.

HR zone. Even if you have to do 7:00min/km just do it, if you can't keep in Z1 still then just do interval walking. Difference between stimulus obtained in Z1 and Z2 is so small that Z2 is not worth it lol

my z2 hr can only be done with brisk walking, once i do any forms of jogging it will shoot into z3 easily in summer conditions

Maintain healthy weight plus able to eat sweet food like cakes and chocolate on my cheat day.

Beside that . I am also able to keep my blood pressure at a normal range .

All pretty standard that we have heard before over and over all. But just another vid to reinforce.

Wondering if i should also start to try training more of this neuromuscular "common drive"

I mean, more or less already reached a decent basic running, cycling, basic strength/cali levels already. Stuff like VO2max, low HR levels etc all there. Not really sure what i will gain even with more training . But below might be more beneficial in my 10-20 years to come.....

eg

Common drive of motor units in regulation of muscle force

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7524216/

In this video, I break down the groundbreaking April 2025 study that followed elite sprinters for 10 years — and reveals what really fails with age: not the muscle, but the signal.
  • I expose why fast-twitch fiber programs, sprinting routines, and one-dimensional sports fail you after 70…
  • I explain why rate of force development (RFD) is the real biomarker of youth…
  • And I lay out the truth behind neuromuscular decline, chaos training, and the closed-loop somatic system no one talks about.

Came across this cheap mini band. Can just get 2-3 pcs of the black one (35-40lb) with your next TB purchase if it does not bump up the shipping cost to next level.

Anyone signed up for SCSM full marathon. I just saw a FB post from official SCSM and it stated that both FM and HM are already 95% sold out. I dunno it is true or not coz I remb last year during late Nov 2024 ,still have slot for FM. I am interested in FM but don't want to commit coz I scared I might end up under trained ..
