U mean do squats or hamstrings?
Today I asked chatgpt to teach me how to make do with 18 kg weights for normal 2 legs squats. It suggested at least 3 sets of 12 reps slow squats (3 secs down, 1 sec hold and 1 sec up) with rest gap of 90 secs. My first set 30 reps normal speed, then after asking chatgpt did 4 x 15, total 90 for the morning.
I see......can lah. We are not super particular about huge hypertrophy and not into becoming a bodybuilder/powerlifter, as long as hard enough and got stress/stimulus and not going overly light.
But i feel it's important not to be mistaken between hard and true stimulus.
But one thing personally i like to do is to make sure it is not lactate that is making me "give up" and stop. So after i feel that i have hit muscular failure, i shake the muscles out for 6-10 seconds , catch breathe a bit (yea it can get a bit cardio) and then squeeze out 1-2 reps more. Those reps i feel are really effective.
I usually do 2X of this, usually the last try i can only squeeze out only 1 rep nia, and take 10 seconds to do the rep, maybe even only partial rep or in extreme cases only an isometric hold in which i might even push to 15-20 seconds.
But of coz if that intensity if your joints or tendons cannot tahan , then dont push until like that.
So that is also why i think 1 working set is workable for me, at least for now. Every 48-72hrs hit it once.
Workable for my schedule and commitment to this kind of strength training.
You can also do the 1-3 reps in reserve method like what Mike Israetel said, but main issue I see is what "Reps in Reserve" truly means and is not merely a misinterpretation of the user.
