I think for first time to Kyoto, better to stay near nishiki market area or at gion area, near the river that runs through kyoto.

If stay near train station, it is far from the tourist attractions and having to walk back each day at night can be tiring.

Anyone tried cross hotel or solaria nishitetsu in Kyoto with breakfast? Looking between these for 2 nights as a base to explore further parts of Kyoto (e.g. mt kurama).

hmm i'd say there is crowd but not that bad even for early april (sakura season). u can check the traffic in the onsen on the tv in the room and when i was there the male side is always 50% or less but female side higher like 60+% whenever i saw. queues within were quick e.g. the daily night free ramen from 9-11pm except the laundry which depends on abit more luck

i was between this n another hotel near the station that was built in 2022 but i chose this cause it has the tatami theme n the onsen facilities looked better

Just returned from Kyoto for a short 4 day stay with family.

Would recommend: Richmond Hotel Premier Kyoto Ekimae
https://richmondhotel.jp/en/kyoto-ekimae/
Pros:
1. Affordable rates with nice reasonably sized, clean, well designed room. Separate WC & shower area, with sufficient storage areas (including trouser press)

2. Large 50' TV with up-till-date VOD (including adult ;) ) and ease of use Airplay/Mirrorcast
3. Good Japanese breakfast buffet

4. Amenities are readily available @ lobby (eg, bath salts, beauty face masks, disposable towels, razors, tea, coffee, etc)
5. Complementary afternoon snacks from 1-5pm (eg, matcha parfait, coffee, tea)

6. Complementary dinner drinks from 6-830pm (eg, sake, wine, nuts)
7. 10min walk from Kyoto station
8. Self-check out station

Cons:
1. I cant think of any .. really. No in-house hot springs. But then again .. you're in the Kyoto city itself. There are plenty around.

I love this new find.

Is it just me or kyoto hotels are very expensive compare to other cities esp in November?

For my dates in kyoto, I found hotels starting from 250 sgd per room per night, which is double compared to other places. Ryokans cost even more at average 300-400 per night onwards!

Think it is due to autumn season.

Kyoto is famous for autumn leaves.
