in fact, you should insist for a correction.

did you go for a eyesight test to see whether the doctor gave you the correct figure.

maybe he ain't keen to do it for you?

thanks for sharing.

Indeed, you're right. EEC does have good records of success rate, but I'm just sharing my encounter. Hence, people considering Lasik surgery, intensive research should done beforehand :)

Probably I should go for an eyesight test, and proceed back for a re-correction. Currently, eyewear shop need to pay for an eyesight test or is it free?

He does sounds a bit reluctant for a re-correction, and facial expression shows it too.

I will update again if there is any new development for my case.

Last December 2016, I did Epi-Lasik at EEC (under Dr Julian). Also, completed all the review check-ups. However, common side-effects like halos and glare still exist after post surgery till now.

Sadly, there are still degree residual leftover.
Left: 25 deg (Astigmatism)
Right: 50 deg (Astigmatism) and 25 deg (Myopia)
* Previously both my degree were 375 (Myopia)

Dr Julian said that he will only proceed with re-surgery (over-correction/under-correction) if the degree residual is above 75 deg.

In my case, my left side is 25 deg [< 75 deg], and my right side is 25 deg [According to Dr Julian, apparently 50 deg (Astigmatism) cancels out 25 deg (Myopia)].

Now, about 7 months after surgery, it had left me no choice to live with this degree residual for the rest of my life. Under low-light environment, vision tends to get blurred and hard to focus.

In conclusion, do consider properly before you proceed with the surgery. You could get perfect 20-20 vision or ended up like me.

Can I know your degree for astigmatism before the surgery?
I have slight astigmatism like yours but I don't get any issue when using contact lens without correction for astigmatism. Is it the glares and halos that are bothering you

And I had always thought even people who do not wear glasses will have slight astigmatism. Like 25-75

a correction is like a few hundred bucks.

and for Epi-LASIK, the doctor will need to use the microkeratome to cut the epithelium.

you probably had to pay for all these equipment and any follow up consultation.

unlike normal LASIK, the flap can be reopen and corrected easily.

with the time spent on correction, he could easily earn more from a full paying patient. or maybe he felt the time you waste on the recovery or the further risk you might undertake for your subsequent correction just isn't worth it.

maybe just spend a little more on another eye specialist to seek further opinion.

Probably I should go for an eyesight test, and proceed back for a re-correction. Currently, eyewear shop need to pay for an eyesight test or is it free?

There are a few information to take note which i believe will help those who are considering to go for lasik surgery.

Shinagawa EC friend referral is 300 dollars discount.

By choosing the "SNEC assigned surgeon" options, the price of the surgery will be cheaper then choosing your preferred doctor (I got A/Prof Jod Mehta).

Btw any advise on which clinic should i go for?

Considering the price difference between SNEC and Shinagawa EC ( Dr Lee) for IntraLase Lasik is about 600 dollars.

Like you, I chose the SNEC assigned surgeon for cheaper rate and I got Prof Allen Fong. However, my cornea thickness was below average thickness size and he suggested for a 2nd opinion from the hod at SNEC, Prof Rosman. Prof Rosman recommends the Lasek option for me due to my below average cornea thickness. For me, I didn't consider other clinics as SNEC has good reputation and well recommended by many. My surgery is set for 10th July early morning.

I see. The regression is that bad.
is 6 months considered the final result, or is it still healing?
I was actually keen to go ahead with EEC, now have to reconsider again.

I had my final review around late March 2017, having trouble to focus, and need to really strain my eyes on objects.

So till now about 6 month after surgery, I don't see anymore improvements after the final review. I guess it's not healing and could be final, not sure about this.

Re correction surgery is free right? He can earn more money from new patients than doing re correction surgery where he only earn from post op medications. Anyone can guess his vested interest . I'm his lasik patient before and I had to wait for 4 months to see him after 5 years warranty. One week before my appointment to see him about vision issues , I received a call from EEC saying that Dr Julian can't see me because he will be overseas. The caller keep insisting that I should see other doctors because Julian is not "free" . Wtf.. in my heart .. I know I won't get to see him ever.. he would rather attend to other golden gooses who don't give him problems.

Yes, within the warranty period the re-correction surgery is wavied off, and medications are charged only.

Did you manage to meet him? Or did you meet other doctors at ECC? However, during my final reviews session, he said that he will make an "open" appointment for me, can just call in and schedule a time and date.

EEC already postponed my appointment few times already. Give up hope already. Now seeing SNEC. No choice ..
That time 2012 I did the pre op exam , I was attended by 2 young girls I suspect interns .
During the day of surgery and one intern took my patient file and informed the nurse that I opt for LASIK wheras I wanted to do EPIlasik. I alerted them and what the intern replied? " Don't worry" wtf !!!
Later she went to take the micro keratome..
I believe people who visit the clinic can attest to that- you can see "interns" walking around

so is LASEK/epi LASIK afterall better than LASIK in terms of less complication and higher degree of accuracy of correction?

is PRK still safer after all, since
it was endorsed by SAF for almost a decade.

not sure about now thou.

I always have the impression that LASEK/epi LASIK, being less invasive will have lesser complication.

PRK is use alcohol to peel off the epithelium which is eliminate the kinkiness compared to using microkeratome. I don't think microkeratome can cut off the epithelium cleanly.
I think PRK is better than EPIlasik

oh yah I remembered speaking to a eye surgeon on why he preferred prk.

lasek uses microkeratome and epi-lasik uses a epithelial separator, and both create a epithelium flap. after the laser correction, the epithelium flap is covered back.

the doctor said the epithelium flap is useless. I'm not sure whether this flap will hinder recovery, or will increase complication. but he said he would prefer prk. furthermore, alcohol is cheaper than the microkeratome and epitelial separator.

PRK is using the laser to ablate the cornea. However, there are many variants of removing the epithelium in PRK.

Epi-lasik is the mechanical means of separating the epithelium by using a epikeratome.

LASEK is to use alcohol to loosen the epithelium for separation. The typical procedure is to use put a well on the eye and pour a alcohol solution into the well for around 30s and use mechanical instruments to separate the epithelium.

Transepithelial PRK is to use a laser to ablate the epithelium .In the past, the technology was not so advanced so surgeons had to perform 2 steps. 1st step was to ablate the epithelium manually by observing the blue light disappearance under the laser. 2nd step was to ablate the cornea. There was a short transition time between these 2 steps, leaving the cornea exposed to the environment. Due to the above, this was not popular I believe thus in the past, it was epi-lasik or LASEK.

The latest technology is the TransPRK by Schwind Amaris. It has the monogram for ablating the epithelium better and it ablate the epithelium and cornea in a single step. It's model is based on the sample dimensions and thickness of the epithelium based on the general population. Apparently, the thickness and dimensions of the epithelium is pretty consistent among individuals.. It's not perfect but it is better than ablating manually as I described above.

I believe the future technology is that the machine can scan and detect and model the epithelium of an eye and ablate precisely. This is not available yet.

Different surgeons will have different protocols and procedures which they are comfortable with and their preferred machines. This is why every surgeon may give a different opinion.

As usual, caveat emptor.
