This question has appeared in Yr 2002 JLPT 3 Grammar Section.

Just now in class, the sensei has explained this question and how to get the answer [4]. However, many of my classmates were still discussing & asked sensei how come the answer is 4.

I think they might not fully understand this question. I myself also take some time to think about it very carefully before deciding the answer to be 4. Thus, I think it might be a good idea to discuss this question.

Why don't you get a Kanji Dictionary? Kinokuniya do sell.

I am going to get one as well very soon.

i disagree. ねているdoesn't tell u the answer because the options are all similar but in different forms. ねているwill be the hint if the options are

- しんだ　（死んだ）
- たべた　（食べた）
- のんだ　（飲んだ）
- よんだ　（読んだ）

because the only logical one is sleeping like u're dead. you can't sleep like u ate, drank or read, right?

Does this mean the question actually fits into this grammar?

The plain form is しんだ then. Plain past tense.
The so called hint here is つかれて (as he is tired), but not relevant.
It does help you to decide that if you are tired, you will sleep like you died (past tense).
しに - masu stem
しね - imperative
しねば - conditional
しんだ - past

Eh not sure if this is what you r asking but

Verb plain form + よう (or verb past tense)
Noun + の　＋　よう
な形容詞 + な　＋　よう
い形容詞　＋　よう


Was wondering if its the past tense or present tense....

When you add に　to よう, you would have changed it into an adverb.　(describes the verb)
