Hmm, did you guys lean the polite form as the "base form"?

For me, I am used to learning the dictionary form and treat it as the "base form"

not sure about other schools but for ikoma you will start off with ~ます形(also your polite form) then proceed to learn other forms

@dimitri_can: yea that is a jlpt 2 grammar but i thought its ~に限っていません?

Let me explain.

In order of politeness

尊敬語・謙譲語・美化語
丁寧語 (~ます、~ません)
普通語 (辞書形 e.g 書く、聞く ない-形、た-形、 ます-形, て-形)

You are right to say the base form is the dictionary form. But 丁寧語 is the preferred. Not ultra polite, not casual, just fine.

Kinokuniya,but the pricing is steep.
Ikoma was selling electronic dictionary awhile ago.Don't know if they still offering that.
If you can get someone to buy it for you in japan,it will be cheaper and better.
Better because wider selection.

Wanna buy a dictionary from Japan? Buy mine!

Or, for other models, I charge only 30SGD. ;)
So cheap and convenient. Hehe!

But, honestly, you don't need to spend on dictionaries that cost a few hundred dollars.
