this thread for few days and managed to read 70% of the entries. I've been interested in Japanese culture for years and finally had the courage to learn the language. I decided to register for JCS after reading all feedbacks. But since registration is still 3 months away, i would like to do some self study.

Any advice? All right, I have finally signed up for Bunka ele 1 this coming sunday lesson, after a long hiatus and procastination.
Damm, I read the book, dont even know what the hell is going on lol, hope I am able to pick up and catch up during class.
Btw, my teacher is Ms Masada, is she good?Any advice?
most teachers are very friendly de...Hi All,
I have been stalkingthis thread for few days and managed to read 70% of the entries. I've been interested in Japanese culture for years and finally had the courage to learn the language. I decided to register for JCS after reading all feedbacks. But since registration is still 3 months away, i would like to do some self study.
There are many online materials, tetxbooks , guides etc available. I am overwhelmed and confused. I've learnt Hirgana and Katakana and are ready to proceed to the next stage. After much comparison, I decided to use these materials. Can anyone advise if I am on the right track or am I being too ambitious?
Other than Japanesepod101, are there any other sites where I can learn about pronounications?
I do not have any japanese or japanese speaking friends
Thank you very much and I appreicate all feedbacks.
1) Main Textbook: Japanese for Busy People I with CD (Series II and III later)
2) For Kanji : The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary with reference to http://japanese.about.com/library/blkodarchives.htm
(http://www.amazon.com/Kodansha-Kanj...=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285064969&sr=1-3)
3) For Vocabulary: Basic Japanese Vocabulary for Beginners (http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Voca...=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285065239&sr=1-9)
4) A Dictionary of Japanese Particles (A Kodansha Dictionary) http://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Ja...=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285065295&sr=1-3
in order not to overwhelm yourself, the Japanese for Busy People (Kana version) would be sufficient to prepare for JCS Elementary
Have Fun!

i still gt some problem with the grammars, shld i get the "Dictionary of Japanese Particles" Or just memorise my notes by hard?
If u mean attending int4 w/o missing any single lesson, then revise on yr own then take the Int4 final test at yr own convenience, it's possible.
If u mean w/o attending any class but hv all e notes fr someone else, still possible, but slightly harder, since u will be missing out on the classroom experience [ including audio listening exercises ]. And in case u dont know, there is a listening comprehension test other than e usual oral & written test for Int4, u need to pass that also in order to qualify for PA1 [ unless u r able to get exemption ].
If u only hv the textbk, but no notes, then gd luck. Textbk is only meant as a [ teaching ] guide to senseis, trying to interpret e various nuances in e textbk w/o sensei & no notes [ e gems in e lessons ] is not recommended [ may b possible, but may take long time & monumental effort ]. Unless u really need 2 save e money, otherwise, it's not worth it from a cost-benefit point of view.
its possible if you just want to pass the test. but not good if you want to speak/write proper Japanese.
from the sentence above, assuming that you wrote it yourself, can see a few mistakes, a bit messy.
pls advise on improvements!
