Hi all,

just wondering if i wanna sign up for JLPT N2 prep class at IKOMA or BUNKA, would i need to take a placement test? The site at IKOMA stated mandatory placement for normal language class, but only recommended students to have studied sufficiently to take prep class. BUNKA's site did not state the availability of any JLPT prep courses.

I have not taken JLPT before owing to time constraint. however, i did study up to LAJ5 at NUS, finished "minna no nihongo" and a half of "an integrated approach to intermediate japanese"

it's kinda tight for me to revise everything now and take a placement test (if required) to join IKOMA's or BUNKA JLPT N2 prep class? Assuming that i cannot join in the first lesson, am i allowed to join a prep class halfway?

-You need to take placement test for Ikoma..
-Bunka's prep class usually start in Aug/Sept.

-An integrated approach to intermediate Japanese is about N3-N2 level if you finish the whole book. So u can assume that you are currently at N4-N3 level.

-Yes. I doubt the teachers will allow u to join Ikoma's N2 prep class. They might well advise u to join Advance class instead.

My overall advice: Do it slowly, when you rush, you are likely to not do so well... If you really wanna chiong for N2, you must be prepared to spend half a day (i.e 6-8hours a week) to study for your Japanese. N2 may be easy to pass, but if your ultimate aim is N1, my advice is to firm up your basics first before starting the class.

As such would you be able to advise on the viability and availability of a 家庭教師 for instance？Or are there any other ways?

Ah. I was from NUS too but only managed to study up to LAJ4. Hmm..why don't you try out N3 first in July? This is just a suggestion. I joined IKOMA's N2 prep class last year and I must say the content was really a lot. The notes+homework itself took 4 huge files.

I really have to agree with dimitri-san that you have to put in a lot of hours daily to study.But I'm really satisfied with it coz I managed to pass the July paper on my first attempt

But I did sit for N3 first on Dec 2010 and attended Ikoma's pre-advanced up till Advanced 3 before my N2 attempt. So I guess that helps a bit...
