i am not sure if you know. JCS is in the process of changing their textbook. check the notice on the JCS notice board. (^_^)

Bunka has recently changed a bit of the structure of their syllabus too. They used to have 2 levels for Elementary, they have changed it to 3.

Btw, i am interested to know, do they teach how to pronounce the words in JCS beginner class?

Haha... Dimitri sensei is king. He knows everything there is to know for Japanese language education in Singapore. Even JLPT there is also insider information. すごい:s31:

いいえ, just wanna help all to make a wiser decision... I don't dare to say i am a good teacher myself, but i am more of the one that like to push students to strive better..

I actually spend a lot of time to do research on JLPT. I have heard from some students who study in the language schools and their interpretion of how the new JLPT works is not fully correct. I got to know about how the new JLPT works through my students results. It's gonna be a long story, but i shall keep it for those who attend the session. Already on waiting list le. hehe.
To be honest, JLPT is not really a good gauge of your Japanese. In China, there are people who pay $$ to ask others to help them take the JLPT exam. No offence to our China comrades, but sometimes i really admire them.

Hi Guys... Japanese Jokes for you all to destress!

#1
生徒:先生、何もしてないのに僕のこと叱ることあるの?
教師:そんな理不尽なことで怒ったりするわけないでしょ。
生徒:良かったぁ。先生、僕宿題してません。

#2
先生:「I go to Tokyo」を過去形にしなさい。はい、太郎君!
太郎:「I go to Edo」

#3
患者「先生。私、とても怖いんです。手術なんて初めてのことなんです」
執刀医「お気持ちはよく分かりますよ。私もとても怖いです。手術なんて初めてですから」

Haha... Yeah...Agreed. JLPT is not a good gauge. But asian students value exam and especially the cert. But to put it in another perspective, in singapore we do not have much chance to use japanese, so the only way to prove to others that we 'know' japanese is to get a JLPT cert. Haha...

Usually held on friday evenings.
The Japanese Cultural Society-Singapore
Starting last year, they also offered a 'package' conversation class together with the regular classes usually held just before/after each class.

I don't know how they conduct the conversation classes though.

I know of the JCS conversational classes. We were encouraged to sign up for the class but the timing doesnt fit in to my schedule and class size is 13 max. Im only free on sundays.

13 is quite big. how is the teacher going to point out all the students' mistakes? I would never have such a big class.

Just like in Bunka, all the Pre-advance classes are also about this class size...

Are you all taught how to pronounce the word correctly?

hatsuon.jpg

yes, there ARE teachers who teach their students how to pronounce words correctly, using something like the pic above.

yes, my teachers in IKOMA did that.

Wow! Your teacher must be one of the rare ones. Such teachers are quite hard to find nowadays. I presume that was a few years ago? Care to share a bit more? Do they teach when u need to go up and down for the particles after that? Like, if u say 「にほんご が」, the 「が」 at the back needs to go up? Are you guys taught the structure of how to see or just memorize by hard?

yes, that was years ago. but then, isn't all teachers of languages supposed to do that? diff languages have diff intonations. its not about just making the sounds of the words. but then, i still hear a lot of people with their weird pronunciations, using chinese or english style. the teachers i learned from all did it that way, or at least corrected how we pronounced.
the teachers who don't teach their students how to, or don't correct their pronunciation are........hmmm......

Haiz... I wish i can be that optimistic as you.

You will be surprised at the current schools standards now. Gone are the days where we last studied, where teachers are caring enough to correct your pronunciation until it's correct. Now, from what i heard, they correct max 2 times, if you read wrongly, that's it.

One of my students who went to a school to study. N4 class still use Romaji, after that, i spent long time to convert him back to use Hiragana and Kanji.

Some of my students also jump ship to my class cos they realize the teachers didn't teach them the correct pronunciation.

The best one: throw you the whole vocab list, ask you go figure out the pronunciation yourself.

Enough said... :(

More on the intonation

N4 class still use Romaji??? is it one of those Japanese language schools or community centre??? its good to quit that school hmmm.....can reveal the school?
well, sometimes it's up to the students to do that themselves, can't expect the teachers to do that for too long. listen and learn from somewhere else.

it's one of the language schools... seems that the students requested for it, then the teacher just obey... :(

you will be surprised. I am going to teach my Europe friend in Romaji fully for 3 months first. Cos he has problems reading and writing Hiragana. :(
And he got phobia of Hiragana already. So have to do it slowly.

i think you mean 名詞修飾形? not 修飾刑? =)

名詞修飾形 means noun modifying form. If you have Minna no Nihongo, you would have learned it in Chapter 22.

E.g

私は水を飲みます I drink water

So if i want to describe the water that i drink, it would be

私が飲む水 The water that i drink.

これは私が飲む水です。 This is the water that i drink.

=======================================
If i want to change it to past tense (e.g: this is the water that i drank)

これは私が飲んだ水です。 This is the water that i drank.

Also, you actually did a subset of this in Chapter 1 and 8.

私の水 (my water)
いい水 (good water)
きれいな水 (clean water)
飲む水 (the water that i drink)
飲んだ水 (the water that i drank)
飲まない水 (the water that i don't drink)
飲めない水 (the water that i cannot drink)

Hope this is clear?
