Lenovo Y580 Users Feedback

Hi Guys and Gals,

Just like to hear any feedback from any Lenovo y580 users here(FHD or Non-FHD verson)?

So far hows the system performance, any issues on hardware and software?
How about heat issues?

Y580 non-FHD user here. Very powerful graphics for a laptop, good screen (though I would have bought the Y580p FHD if it came out earlier), comfortable and relatively big backlit keyboard to type on. There is an msata port for expansion. Only problem is the 5400rpm Seagate HDD that slows everything down. I got so frustrated with the slow speed that I swapped it out for and SSD. Now with SSD as boot drive and HDD as external storage, I feel that Y580 to me is worth the money, beating non-FHD competitors like the Asus N56VZ, HP DV6-7007TX and Dell Inspiron 15R. (though i would say the FHD version is more worth the money spent, esp for gamers out there.)

Got frustrated with the Samsung 1Tb 5400rpm slow drive. Other than that, I fell in love with the wonderful 1080p screen,powerful gfx and it's not too heavy too. The trackpad is also very responsive (speaking as a MacBook Pro user for 5 years).
I ripped the HDD out and bought a USB3.0 casing for it. Also installed the Sandisk 480Gb SSD and it's flying now.
Also slotted in a 64Gb Class10 SDCard which stores my music as additional storage.

Playing games like Torchlight2,Diablo3, Sleeping Dogs, Max Payne3 and recently PES2k13 and SFxTekken on it. Wonderful machine and highly recommended.

It gets kinda hot when gfx runs full swing but then my former Retina MBP is also very hot! So it's common.

I got the FHD version for >1 mth. Yet to chg to SSD.

Problem now: touchpad not working. Will try driver, restore, etc b4 sending in to chk.

I bought e non fhd last mth, software wise, how come whenever I start up, I get this mesg" unable to configure updates" , n I have to do windows update everyday, is this normal?

call Lenovo to complain. For mine, the Y580 hangs everytime I try to use Lenovo Eee Optimiser to optimise boot speed, ever since I swapped the HDD for SSD.

I got a "free" upgrade to 16 GB 1600 MHz ram when buying the computer at Harvey Norman for SGD1699.

On the other hand I'm not entirely pleased with the computer so far. The touch pad seems to be rather awkward in the form of it suddenly stops working. The buttons on the touch pad was one of the main concerns for me before actually buying it. I were right my my assumptions. When you press down the buttons, it feels as if you're doing some unnatural. Just feels weird. I do have the feeling it won't last long. You're easily able to get past these problems by just using a regular mouse.

I have yet to remove the bloatware, which currently means I'm sitting at a 59 second boot time. Which is rather long. Changing to an SSD and removing the bloatware would most likely reduce that significantly. I expect down towards 10-15 seconds.

The PC gets hot during extensive usage. It feels as if there's to little space for the air to move freely out of the chassis, meaning some of the hot air would be circulating at certain spots. This is on the other hand a normal problems of high-end computers. It will eventually suffocate the GPU, making it halt or freeze every now and then. Changing to an SSD would possibly remove some of the heat.

It is a good computer compared to the price you're paying for it. If you put in around SGD200-250 more you would be able to put in a Crucial M4 256 GB SSD, which would improve the experience by a rather large margin. I'm just waiting for a day where I have enough time to do a SSD hunt throughout Singapore.

I think the bloatware that comes with the Y580 is limited. I didn't uninstall anything.

I lugged my Y580 all the way for my 2 week biz trip to Thailand, Malaysia and Turkey. Put it in my knapsack, lugging it around with no issue. It didn't felt heavy and I was playing games whenever I had the time in hotel.

Hi guys, I'm about to buy the y580. Quick question, does the FHD comes with Blu-Ray drive or DVD-RW? Funny as the Lenovo website said it comes in Blu-Ray but when I ask at shops they said it only comes in DVD-RW.

only reflects DVD-RW but when u actually use it, it supports Blu-ray playback as well. coz there is also a BD drive alongside the typical DVD-RW drive when u view in under 'My Computer'.
