Alienware is awesome because of the Graphics Amplifier which allows boosting of gaming performance and easy access to its components allowing DIYers to upgrade easily.
And of course, Dell's excellent Pro support allowing gamers minimal downtime.

The Graphics Amplifier could be shrunken by changing to a SFF PSU.
Even better, the latest desktop GTX 980 can be used in the new series of Alienware laptops so the Graphics Amplifier might not even be needed at all.

SLI mode with the Graphics Amplifier and the laptop's GPU could be enabled.

A switchable feature could be introduced so users do not need to shut down the laptop, unplug/plug Graphics Amplifier and restart laptop.

Mechanical backlit keyboard option for Alienware laptops.

Easy access for the CPU for upgrading like the Graphics MXM module socket.

Nvidia G-sync support.

The Alienware laptop itself has two graphics cards in SLI and if SLI together with Alienware Graphics Amplifier which is quite alot of graphics power. Does one really need so much graphics power?

My first impression to Dell Alienware is its solid build and premium feel. Beside knowing it is a solid and high performance gaming device for serious gamers, and also it 'good' pricing..

If possible, hope Dell will able to the weight of their Dell Alienware 15 R2, 17 R3 by using Titanium or Carbon fiber material to replace those metal parts..

Alienware laptops and Alienware Graphics Amplifier are partially made from Carbon Fibre but I don't think Titanium can be used. Aluminum or Magnesium Alloys are possible materials.

One thing i like about Dell and Alienware is the flexibility to choose which parts you want to upgrade. A lot of manufacturers dont do this; they simply sell you the model with everything fixed. It's like sometimes you prefer the other model design but you want to choose the parts you want.

Hmm if Alienware allows consumer to upgrade their graphic card in the Alienware Graphics Amplifier it will be really great. It will bring greater gaming performance and flexibility like how a DIY desktop would.

What do you mean by "Alienware allows consumer to upgrade their graphic card in the Alienware Graphics Amplifier it will be really great."?
There is no graphics card included in the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. You have to purchase your own graphics card and slot it in the slot available then connect it to the PSU of the Amplifier. The laptop graphics card will be disable and the graphics card in the Amplifier will do the work.

Boss reporting in.

Hope everyone had a good holiday.

We see so many discussions out there so our question to everyone is this:
What do you guys love about Alienware? And if you have a choice, what parts would you change to make your Alienware more awesome? :o

i think why alienware instead of other laptops for gaming, its simple, alienware is made for gaming, not made to game.

Alienware brings alot of convenience for a gamer, especially one whos not familiar with DIY rig. It is optimised for gaming. You dont need to know how to identify matching processor, graphics card with matching motherboard, you also dont need to waste time assembling the system. Choosing an alienware means a hassle free experience. You will be able to dive right into the pleasures of gaming with it. I may consider getting an alienware in the future if my DIY rig retires. no more researching on the processor, mobo etc. go down to sim lim hunt for it, carry home and slowly assemble. All i need to do is go online, do a few clicks, and just wait for the alienware to be delivered to my place. so much simpler and hassle free!

Performance and convenience aside, the design of the alienware laptop is also very alluring. it is futuristic styling and sleek looking. The ability to change the colour of the keyboard, alien head on the backcover makes the alienware unique and something different even when place with other alienware laptops. I think for this laptop will be a standout if you were to bring it to starbucks to fight with those mbp and mba. :s13:

In the past, there will always be comments on how a laptop can never perform well in gaming. achieving 60+ fps consistently on high resolution settings. Personally, i have this problem too. i can never enjoy gaming on a laptop because the components in it are just not good enough to play a game smoothly. I have to rely on my desktop all the time.

However, alienware has changed this, with the Alienware graphics amplifier (AGA). It allows you run a fully fledged desktop graphics card and connect it to your alienware laptop. With this feature, you will be able to hit the optimal fps at high end graphics, just like you are on your desktop. I see this being a really great add on. Again, it is hassle free, all I ever need to do is maybe change the graphics card in the AGA and I will be able to enjoy gaming on high graphics settings. VS a desktop, there is no need for any cable management after the insertion/ replacement of graphics card. The convenience here also matters. Theres minimum troubleshooting to be done, unlike a desktop. It also make your gaming area looks more tidy, less wires, small frame size compared to a desktop. I think it looks really impressive to be gaming on it compared to traditional tower desktops.

Of cause, the biggest concern is the weight. not really that enjoyable to be carrying this around. For me, as a healthy adult male, still ok la, but for a petite guy, female gamer etc, abit difficult la. alienware has been trying to improve on this area. eg. using carbonfibre composite material in their laptops. but i still like to see them continue doing more in this area. if they can just get this laptop to be below 2.5KG, woah, confirm will be a sellout.

Never heard of this technology USB powershare. Probably now we need to charge many devices through the USB port so it is more useful now. Dell should introduce this technology to all their Inspirion and XPS series, instead of only the Alienware series.

Meanwhile, there is no documentation that the port supports charging multiple devices through USB Hub. And as i've mentioned in my post, this technology can also be found on other Dell notebook series:

Alienware sales unit lesser than Inspirion series sales~ Alienware sell less earn more money while Inspirion series sell cheaper earn less money per unit but the quantity more than Alienware 17 R3.

Alienware cater to niche gamer industry.. Inspirion is mainstream.

Actually the Alienware Amplifier is a little outdated since Nvidia has managed to squeeze the desktop GTX 980 into laptops.

Are you willing to carrying such 'laptops' around? :s22:

Graphics Amplifier is all about giving your same performance as those 'laptops' above, yet also granting you portability and mobility with smaller Alienware laptops. And certainly those laptops above cost more than lower end Alienware laptop + Graphics Amplifier + GTX 980.

Don't think Alienware can make it cheaper considering the materials used and the goodies in the laptop but I am sure they can reduce the price for Alienware Graphics Amplifier.

Not only its price, I think Dell will also going to make slimmer version of Alienware Graphics Amplifier for mobility and portability purpose. :)

It's the same as with all electronics industry. Profit mainly comes from lower to mid range devices...

I think majority/all of the graphics intensive game dont use touchscreen to play that why not much people bother much when they purchase the Dell Alienware gaming laptop. I think majority of those graphics intensive game at the moment still use keyboard & mouse to play that why nowadays gaming mouse/kb become hot selling. Razer gaming keyboard/mouse + Dell Alienware gaming laptop like Alienware 17 best combination if u got budget :)

A lot of people play using controller on their PC too.

Touchscreen should make it optional for the Alienware laptop. Yes, most people may not need it but it still has its uses. I play Clash of Clans on my PC, so having a touchscreen would be very helpful.

Cause play on my phone will not have slow performance, somemore if I want to record a bit difficult. Play on PC can get 60fps powerful performance with emulator, can zoom out still see everything clearly too. Laptop also have long battery life compared to phone. Dont need to keep charging.

I will not consider the Graphics Amplifier at this moment. I may wait for revision 2 to dabble with one. However i will just get Alienware 15 with GTX 980M if i need all the graphics possible. The GPU will be enough to last the generation of console ports at 1080p FHD.

The additional space taken up by the graphics amplifiers defeats the purpose of buying a gaming laptop. There are people who prefer gaming laptops because of the all in one-ness, and the designs of gaming laptops look like owning a fast sport car or fighter jet, rather than a ordinary big PC box. So to have another big box and cables all around, lessen the cool and neatness factor.

1080p FHD can run at 60fps but definitely not on High settings.

But yeah i agree with you. Alienware should have better designed their Alienware Graphics Amplifier to complement their Alienware laptops.

Now it just looks like regular console to me. The only thing that lights up is the Alien logo. No extra light strips like the laptop. Or maybe they should put the light strips inside the box as well :o

Powerful performance not enough. Must have the gamer design look too.

Dont think its possible to SLI. The GPU from the Alienware Graphics Amplifier will be used instead.

Is NVIDIA SLI supported with an Alienware notebook when combined with an Alienware Graphics Amplifier including an NVIDIA graphics card?

No. When using an Alienware Graphics Amplifier, the internal graphics processor is disabled. However, NVIDIA Optimus technology continues to function with the on-board Intel graphics processor and the GPU in the graphics amplifier.

Dear MSI/DELL and ALL THE MANUFACTURERS:
enough enough enough of proprietary cables!!! It is increasing our e-waste and extremely damaging to our environment! If you only used one standard, then we all can freely swap brand to brand. Even if you do not get our business for the laptop, you might still get for say the graphics amplifier or accessories, if they were universal to begin with!

Hence, if I had a choice, I will use a new universal format with MSI and other gaming manufacturers to connect our Graphics Amplifier to our laptop, be it Asus ROG, Dell Alienware 17 R3 or MSI Ghost. Probably have the whole system linked up with ultrahigh speed cables and remove the dedicated graphics for lighter body. Maybe implement something like the Surface Pro and Lumia 950 series - "liquid" cooling.

Furthermore, I might just have a curved edge somewhere, like the S6 Edge or BlackBerry Priv to do quick actions etc. :o

Furthermore, unlike other competitors like MSI etc, Alienware is not 100% user-modifiable such as the keyboard. Give us a full standard customization keyboard, like what MSI did with Cherry.

I think this proprietary cables and port is one of the way how Dell will make serious gamer did die must get their Alienware series in order to make use of the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. :s8:
