Yah, non-gamer would not prefer Alienware 17 R2, not even consider a portable at 3.8kg. I guess Dell tried to stuff all good stuff in without consider the Asian market.

Asian young children already smaller built and height, carry such heavy weight wii not grow any taller.

Agreed, i myself already find it too big for my liking.

The price of $3999 for Alienware 17 R3 should have included the Alienware Graphics Amplifier ba?!

:s22: no the price of Alienware 17 R3 $3999 does not include Alienware Graphics Amplifier, it sells as a separate unit

Yay this week is really Dell Alienware laptop! This is something that i've always seen outside but because price is too steep for gaming so i never think of getting it. :p
If I'm hardcore on gaming, i would opt for desktop. Maybe that's what all my friends tell me lol. Do gamers really bring their laptop everywhere they go ma?
Just wondering why some of you guys mentioned Dell Alienware R2 and R3, but i googled they look very similar leh. How to differentitate between them? Pardon me, the one in the video is Dell Alienware R2 and R3 laptop :s11:
Erm, you mean it is already selling outside? =:p I never see it in any major superstore, courts, best denki etc. Where do you see it?

I think the video is Dell Alienware 15 R2 or 17 R3, seems big.

Dell Alienware 17 R3 Creative Sound Core3D-EX is powered by Sound Core3D and heralds a new age in 3D gaming audio and online voice communication. Hardware-accelerated THX TruStudio Pro audio technologies deliver unsurpassed audio playback quality, while the innovative CrystalVoice processing lets you communicate with crystal clear vocal fidelity in your multiplayer games, online chats and video conferencing.
sound is very important in gaming as you can hear the enemies or the footsteps coming towards you in a first person shooter. voice communication has to be clear and crisp where your team mates can hear you clearly and understand what you are doing and what they are suppose to do in the game. team leader usually will give strategies or plans to the team mates so you must be able to hear him/her clearly.
besides having a good graphics card for gaming, getting a good sound card is equally important. some laptops fail to deliver good sound quality but Alienware 17 R3 laptop obviously can deliver a powerful gaming experience with good graphics and good sound quality.
of course the price is also very good and as one say you get what you pay for :s13:
Haha, bring back my memories of playing CS.

Since Dell Alienware 17 R2 was made to be portable, why are there an Alienware Graphics Amplifer to made the whole experience of portable gaming not portable~? :s22:

They should have input a powerful GPU inside Dell Alienware 17 R2 without the need of any external source or not asking consumers to topup to buy a huge device~

The graphic card inside the Alienware notebook is already top-class card used for mobile laptops. The Alienware Graphics Amplifer includes a desktop class graphic card which allows you to enjoy similar to desktop powerful gaming performance when you are at home.

This way, you can get the same experience as desktop users while still enjoying the mobility and portability which laptop can offer.

If a person touch such metal contacts with his wet hands, he only have himself to blame. This is a user problem and have definitely nothing to do with Alienware. Might as well make the whole laptop waterproof in this case.

I dont think it matters much really regarding the oxidation part. Most people change their laptops at least every 3~5 years. By then the battery shouldnt be able to hold that long battery life and the performance will surely slow compared to new gaming laptops which will be more powerful.

By then the user should have replaced his old Alienware laptop for a newer one. This is true especially for notebooks which cannot be compared with DIY desktops which parts can be easily replaceable.

:s22: Since Dell Inspiron 15 7000 has spill resistant keyboard, I wonder if Alienware 15 R2 has such a built in feature from Dell.

I am more worried about the metal casing of Alienware 15 R2, everytime I am in an aircon room such as the office or shopping mall when I touch a metal part, I will get static shock~

Hopefully Alienware 15 R2 got good grounding system to prevent static from external source.

:s22: If Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier generate that much heat generate so much heat and needs an aircon room, I guess this system would be a failed product.

As you can see Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier has multiple vents and fans to dissipate the hot air away from the GPU. But with so many fan units, there maybe buzzing noise if this unit was placed in a quiet environment~ :s22:

So end of day, you want quiet device not so powerful. Want powerful, noise~

alienware_graphics_amplifier_4_theverge.jpg

This is inevitable. If you want desktop GPU performance, this is the least you can settle for. Already very good wor. Smaller than desktop CPU.

Anyway seems like nobody mentioned about the Alienware screen not being touchscreen. I suppose this would add greater value for gamers. Dell Alienware should make this optional for the consumers too.

Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier not really suitable for small and neat table.

I guess I would rather get a dell inspiron 24 7000

Dell Alienware Graphics Amplifier bigger & thicker than the "CPU" aka base of the dell inspiron 24 7000 so imo if your table not big and dont intend intensive gaming just get the inspiron series laptop or AIO depend on your needs whether to bring out mah~ Dell Alienware + Alienware Graphics Amplifier together need a big table to put side by side

I guess most people getting Alienware 17 R2 would not be getting Alienware Graphics Amplifier, unless you are serious gamer.

On the other hand, a serious gamer would not be getting a laptop afterall, Alienware Area-51 Gaming Desktop instead~

Since the price was just a few hundreds more than Alienware 17 R2

I_aw_usb3_powershare_mr_v1a.png

This seems to be the USB charging port Alienware branded as USB PowerShare. Touted to charge your USB devices even when system is off. This can leads people into thinking that they can actually shutdown their Alienware laptop entirely and still charge from that special port.

I was rather skeptical of their claim as i haven't really come across any laptop or desktop that can actually charge USB device in cold shutdown mode. My own laptops and ASUS and ASRock desktop motherboards were only able to charge either when PC is on or USB device must be plugged in before putting PC into sleep mode. They do not work when i tried to do a cold shutdown or plug in after sleep, USB devices simply loses the charging mode.

After taking a deeper look into their technology, I was right. USB PowerShare will not be able to charge your USB device when system is doing cold shutdown in battery mode. Their info on web support mentioned that you can only charge devices after shutdown only in AC mode. That also doesn't imply you can plug in to charge after shutdown completed, you have to plug it in before shutting down. And battery charge capacity level must be more than 25%.

Their claim is simply too vague and rather misleading. This charging function also doesn't work out of the box, where you need to enable it from BIOS first before you can use. So users ought to take note that this USB PowerShare feature is no different from other USB sleep charging technology found on other laptops and motherboards.

And I will not encourage anyone to use it for charging in off mode as it is not any more convenient than your standalone USB wall adapter or powerbanks. With USB port active also means part of your PC motherboard circuitry will be powered as well, consuming more power to run it than a standalone USB powerbank/adapter will do.

I think the Dell Alienware R2 with USB PowerShare is not a new technology exclusive to Dell. Acer have that technology since 1990's.

That era no mobile smart phone, only a laptop cooler using the acer laptop usb port. After I shutdown the laptop, unplug from power socket, i wonder why the laptop cooler still running. They did not advertised this great technology that time~ :s22:

I wonder if Dell Inspiron 7000 series has such USB PowerShare? In shutdown mode, when the Intel Realsense Camera detected my present, the computer will auto startup and load the Internet Explorer or any preset software?

I think Dell makes more money from Dell Alienware 17 R3 gaming laptops since sell one can earn 2-3 times the profit margin le :o

their low range $500-600 is very affordable, they aiming at primary school students issit. the specs should be for very basic usage ba. maybe i can also fit into this category since mostly used for videos, MS office and surf surf web only :s13:
