I've been happy with my M1 500mbps ($30.45) broadband for years, even though the contract expired a while back.

M1++ app shows a 1Gbps plan for only $34.90, which is just a few dollars more than my current plan (not sure if this is considered re-contracting although the app says "Change plan"?)

Here's the thing: M1's website lists a 1Gbps plan with a free router for $36.84. Anyone know why the price difference? I suppose this is due to a re-contract of 24mths with free router?

Also, is the extra speed (double) and cost (~$5/mth) really worth it for my family of 4 adults who mostly use YouTube, Netflix, web browsing, and some light mobile gaming?

Your comments is appreciated. Thank you

Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for 4K streaming
At 500 Mbps, you'll need to have 33 streams to slow your network down

YouTube 8K is around 50 Mbps, meaning 10 streams before your network slows

so no, it's not worth it (but then it's only $4.45 extra a month so if you like doing speedtests from time to time then it might bring you joy? idk haha)

For real usage 500Mbps should be okay. So it is perfectly fine to stay with M1 500Mbps plan at S$30.45 per month. This is especially true since I expect broadband market to change quite a bit in year 2024/2025.

On the other hand, I tend to like to carry out SpeedTest myself (that is the only app which needs high internet speed for me. LOL), so I think there is no issue to upgrade to 1Gbps. This is especially true if you can offload the free router at around S$70 to S$80 to offset the difference.

and why would they do this? 🤣

this is delulu
ipv6 adoption is finally gaining momentum, in 5 yrs time, ipv4 as a finite resource may no longer matter

fyi, many companies have been selling ipv4s to amazon for a hefty profit, in case u're frog in a well

the in app change to 1Gbps for 34/mth is not recontract, just change service only

you probably don't need the speed. up to you as to whether you want to pay more or not. I went for it because not much diff in pricing and can download games faster on those few occasions.

u dunno what's the meaning of momentum? :s13:
and why would they sell their huge pool of IPv4 addresses that is appreciating in value just so you can have some dividend at the next annual general meeting? 🤣

you're on mars if you think those holding on to large allocations of IPv4 space would willing give them up for short term capital inflow. 🤣

go look at AS9506's IPv6 capable stats, look at us all straight in the eye and say got momentum 🤡

come back again when it's at least 60-70%. for an ISP that controls their CPE I'd expect at least 80-90%.

There are many selling routers in carousell. Even if one gives huge discounts also hard to sell. So dun even bother to try selling.

Interesting viewpoint. I tend to think M1 issued free routers have much better resale value than Singtel (mostly junk) /Starhub (lousy Nokia Beacon 1/2, so-so Linksys Atlas MX2001).

I tend to think both TP-Link Archer AX72 is a very good value at around S$70 to S$80.

Asus RT-AX3000P is also of good value as an AImesh node at S$70 to S$80. If selling at S$70 is difficult then sell at S$60 if you do not need it.

Asus GT-AX6000 is also of great value, if at around S$360 or lower BNIB.

I recommend the above three routers in many of my replies in this forum.

The other great value is MR issued TP-Link Archer BE805 BNIB at around S$400. That is for people who want a low cost 10G capable WiFi 7 router (not locked to any ISP).

For those worried about the not as ideal routing for China, just remember that most of your movie stremaing site have a CDN and also might not be actually hosted in China. Server in china actually cost a lot more than in germany and netherland where most of this 50 shades of grey streaming site host their stuff.

There is also another thread that compares all the ISP and is very comprehensive. The general sentiment is unless you are gaming on a china server it is unlikely to cause you much problem especially if it is not a real time first person shooter type.

talk so much kok, but don't understand anything
sound like one of those who join IT not out of interest and now jod threatened by ceca
LOL
you're the one talking cock, your whole premise of singtel selling their IPv4 space is just so you can collect a fat dividend cheque

you're on Mars and you know it 🤣

Thanks Xiaofan.

So meaning instead of plugging the lan into the son's PC, I will plug it into AX55 and then use another lan cable to plug from AX55 to Son's PC? Will it get 1gbps too?

Is there any configuration needed to be done on the AX55 router?
@xiaofan will it reduce the speed if connect thru router via Lan?

Also does it matter if I use cat 6 or 7 cable? I am using cat 6 now. When I moved into my house, I believe the contractors used cat 6 to lay too.

If your 500mbps plan contract expires and if U don't renew it, what will happen? Hv been using M1 50mbps for years (coming to 10 years?) but every 2 yrs, I faithfully recontact.
Wondering if I dun recontact, will everything remain status quo and leaving option to decide in case other telcos come out with killer plan to lure me over.
