No. Airplane mode means got signal but no data. Need to enable airplane mode, then disable airplane mode to get back data. Very scary and not suitable for main line.

I'm still with starhub now.

Signal good != data connection. Was he actually using the data or just look at the signal bar? A lot of shopping malls have airplane mode problem.
M1 Maxx is good at my own home (fast speed, no airplane mode problem). Bad airplane mode problems outside (ION, Bedok Mall, NEX, Waterway Point, Compass One, Junction 8, Plaza Singapura, Taka, Wisma, 313 - list is not finalized). So far haven't encountered airplane mode problem in MRT (I take NEL and CC mainly)

but my friend said he try first. if cannot he jump ship

Just buy $12 plan from the retailer and port in using Maxx app later. After the plan expires, it will roll back to $0 base plan, dont let it stay inactive for more than 90 days, say send at least a SMS.

1.) Can i buy this $10 and cancel recurring for the purpose of having a $0 plan?
2.) Does receiving sms count as being active?

2. I don't think so, best bet is to send out.
3. I reckon so as there is no laid out condition for non M1 users, though Circle is its MVNO but may be can call and confirm with Maxx?

I did not receive any email or SMS pertaining to Referer Code for others to use when I buy my plan at the shop. May be this applies to those sign up online directly with Maxx.

Oh, maybe you can visit their authorized retailers to do that. See if they'll let you choose numbers first...

I'd also want to be able to see the numbers before buying, though mine was a port-in so didn't really matter. I did play around looking at the numbers, since got to choose one during the activation process

You can see the available numbers from Maxx app before you sign up. But I don't know whether the Maxx app has a different set of numbers from the retailers.
