Did the repartitioning of the HDD completed successfully? 2hrs for OS X installation using USB bootable drive may be expected if you are using a thumbdrive as it has slow read/write speed.

repartitioning of the HDDwas successful. unfortunately, it wasn't two hours. I started at 9:20PM and the installation finished roughly between 2AM to 3AM.

After the installation of the OS, My MBP is still lagging. Booting up takes a long time and upon logging in (after typing the password), it'll take 1-2mins. Opening other applications would take around 30-40seconds before they open.

You did not restore anything from your backup, correct? If that is the case, it is most likely due to a hardware problem. Perhaps the HDD/RAM is failing, so just check the SMART status of the main drive on Disk Utility just in case it states Failing.

If it says Verified, you may want to bring it in to AASP for diagnosis especially if it is still under warranty. Just tell them the troubleshooting steps you have performed and the fact that the computer is still slow after performing a clean install of the OS.

Can't install Avast Anti-Virus in my MacBook Pro

Hi All. Lately, my avast anti-virus was unable to start up. Following the FAQ, it instructed me to re-install my avast client. After I have uninstalled the avast and trying to re-install it, my mac prompted me that there is a F-Secure Anti-virus in my system which doesn't allow me to install the avast anti-virus. I have run through my entire mac and I couldn't find this F-Secure anti-virus. Can someone here please tell me what to do? Or anti-virus is really unnecessary for Mac environment and therefore, I should not waste my time re-installing avast?

HDD shows that it's verified. MBP Pro is still under warranty with Courts though and LGH (Laptop General Hospital) is where they asked me to send the unit before but the tech guys there said that it's just an OS problem. No offense to them but I'm not even sure if they really do a proper troubleshooting. Btw, are they Mac specialist?

Perhaps the HDD could be on its way to failing, which causes it to slow down. The best indication of a possible HW fault is to attempt replicating the issue on a fresh OS install, since the computer would be starting from scratch.

Laptop General Hospital is not one of the AASPs for Mac computers. They are just a third-party service solution.

yeah, perhaps it might be the hdd .. but LGH seems insist that it's an OS. i have no other option thgouh coz that what Courts suggested since it's covered by their 'extended warranty'. anyway, Courts suggested to do it one last time before they refer me to another shop.

how i wish i should have purchased an Apple Care

Is your Macbook Pro within the 1 year limited warranty period? if yes, you can still bring it to an Apple Authorised Service Provider. It only mean that you have 2 different warranties overlapping.

Check warranty status @ https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

If it's still covered under Apple's 1 year limited Warranty, I would recommend you to call AppleCare @ 800-186-1087.

Inform the AppleCare advisor that you have done an erase and install and you are still facing sluggish/performance issue after that.

You also need to point out that you DID NOT restore your data after doing an erase and install because that can only mean that we have not isolated it to hardware fault.

Most likely the AppleCare advisor will get you to bring it in to an AASP for further Hardware diagnostics.

Why I say to call AppleCare first? because if you were to go to an AASP without speaking to Apple, they might want to charge a diagnostic fee if they couldn't find any hardware fault.

But if you were referred by Apple, it's a slightly different story - of course you want to make sure that you gained agreement with the advisor that you should not be charge for anything upon visiting the AASP.

Honestly I don't think you need an antivirus program at all - so just uninstall both of them. I found this article on how to uninstall F-Secure How can I uninstall the security product for Mac? - F-Secure Community - 15560

Take note of the section in red, i think you might need to uninstall it that way since you mentioned you ran through entire mac and couldn't find the F-Secure program.

To uninstall the product:

Open the folder where you installed the product. By default, the product is in the Applications folder.
Open the F-Secure folder.
Double-click the Uninstall icon. The uninstallation program opens.
Click Uninstall. You need to enter your administrator password to uninstall the product.
Enter your administrator user name and password and click OK.
The product is removed from your computer.

In case the uninstallation script does not work, you can uninstall the program manually by opening a Terminal.app and issuing the following command: 'sudo /usr/local/f-secure/bin/uninstall_MacProtection’.

- What have you attempted to do so far to troubleshoot the issue?
- Are there any recent changes in your configuration?(Software update, new programs installed, new device setup & etc..)

- I can see that the printer is not listed @ OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
- that means you may need to download the driver manually from FX website

If you have not tried anything, the simplest troubleshooting step I would start is by shutting all devices down from the main switch(making sure it's totally off instead of sleep mode or standby mode) then turn them back on 1 by 1.

- Do you have any other devices that's able to print using the network printer?

If yes, I would attempt to remove the printer from the computer, reset printing system and attempt to add it back again.

Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
Mac OS X: How to manually add a Windows shared printer

Also just make sure that your mac computer is up to date by running Software Update.

What do you mean by network uploading?
Are u referring to accessing the scanned document from the printer on your mac?

How do you usually perform the task?

could be smb issue, it happens to my network devices when my mbp changes ip when i switch from lan to wifi or vice versus.

the only option is to restart the mac machine.

did you check ur smb settings on your mac? maybe you turn it off under sharing or your printer was not using smb in the first place, maybe Upnp?

Hi guys,
1st time here in this part of HWZ.

I have a 3year old MBP 15', and just recently it decided to go cranky.. some of the problems:

1) firefox and chrome takes very long to go to its homepage when I launch it from start. (about 10-15 seconds)

2) app store will not load. there will be the spinning sign, then stop. the main area will be empty. none of the tabs featured, top charts, categories, etc would work.

3) battlenet launcher will not work. it will be stuck on updating battlenet agent forever.

these problems never occurred before and it just happened a few days ago.

some other info, internet connection is fine, i'm using wired connection.

any help please?

Hi Asriznet. I have type the CLI in my terminal and it has confirmed that F-Secure is no longer in my Mac. Hence, I am puzzled why do I still have this problem. Anyway, I shall live without the Anti-Virus. I really appreciate your help.

Just some isolation steps first, can you check if issue persists in Safe mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564

If yes, restart and check if issue happens when u are logged in a to fresh new admin account? You can create one in System Preferences -> Users & Groups.

If not, a 3rd party process might the cause of the issue as Safe Mode will disable those process automatically.

If issue happens only on your own account instead new account, be it safe mode or not then we are dealing with some user-specific settings.

If issue happens on both safe mode + new user account, you might have a corrupted OS or faulty HDD, my best bet is to perform a backup first. If you have not heard of time machine, refer to the following article to set it up to backup your system - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427

And also just make sure your system is up to date by performing a software update.

your issue seems to be consistent with internet dns resolve issue. Are you using a DNS other than the one provided by ur ISP? if u r, try google dns.

you can consider flush ur dns as well.

if all dun work, maybe check ur permissions
