I'm planning to install ssd and keeping my hdd on my macbook pro.

is this the best way ? The perfect SSD and HDD hybrid MacBook setup | Technical doodles and other nonsense

If you planning to get a decent size SSD like 256GB or more then i think it's okay but managing your storage is a bit of a headache because you have data stored on 2 separate drives.

I personally prefer to fusion the drive as 1 single volume instead of 2 separate drives. Performance may not be as good as the SSD as boot drive but definitely much better than the stock HDD.

Boot time for me is less than 10 seconds with a 60GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD + 750GB Toshiba 5400rpm HDD

A bit unclear....
Which application opens up when u open the text file?
What do you mean always appear? Screenshot can give us better understanding on your issue?

Quit the application(click on the application name on top left on menu bar and click quit) and see if it does the same when you open the same application.

Yeah similar to the Airport Time Capsule as well, best is to use a plugged in drive for time machine like Thunderbolt enabled drive but a USB 3.0 is good enough.

Kinda defeats the purpose of Time machine. As least for me as I'm using a laptop and moving around the house all the time.

Next, having a Raid enabled USB3.0 drive also not cheap.

Apple should get their act together and fix the reliability of time machine over wireless networks. Its not rocket science.

it is rocket science for normal end users.

A lot of factors to consider when dealing with wireless issues like user's environment. For your case, an additional factor to consider is 3rd party hardware(NAS). If the NAS shuts off by itself or lose connection while time machine is backing up, it's definitely going to cause corruption but i'm sure there are so many different ways to look at it.

not being bias but I don't see a similar or better backup program by microsoft.

It is not rocket science for Apple. The whole idea of the Apple eco system is to make it transparent to the normal end users. So it is a failure.

If they didn't think it would work over wireless or Lan, they would not have released the time capsule la (which also has this issue). Its obviously a low priority issue for them as this has been dragging for many years. Check out the threads in Apple Forums.

All your factors and more are covered by other systems which use wireless networks. All these are common issues in modern network environments, why are they able to pick up? Do you have to refresh your browser every time you dropped packets?

In the computing world, there is more than Apple and Microsoft you know, why don't you compare to other solution providers. Have you heard of Dropbox having a failed upload and corrupting your cloud storage? How about Acronis?

Oh, in Windows 8, they did add a back up program in the control panel. Actually there are 2. 1 for system backups and 1 for data backups. I'm still evaluating them. Better? Not sure yet (Data files backup is just a simple copy sequence but it works), And at least they are not running on sparse bundles, so the space can't be corrupted.

did a search. wow this time machine over network issue is pretty bad. n been around for quite a long time. backup failing is 1 thing but it shouldn't corrupt e whole thing. ppl losing all their previous backups :s22:

Because network backups are stored in sparsebundle images unlike connected drives which stores in a folder directory, if the image gets corrupted, the whole backup system gets affected.

A reputable guy from the Apple Discussions forum(pondini) made a very useful site http://pondini.org.

It has very detailed explanation and tips on Time Machine.

My advice to my clients is to use Network backups for convenience but I still advice them to do another copy of time machine on a connected drive on a lesser frequency(once a month or so) as it's more reliable/stable.

if too much work and too much to think about diagnosing problems, invest in cloud backups like crashplan.

If you're really paranoid about backups.
Consider alternatives such as Tarsnap or ARQ.

I have a issue with my MBP mid 2010.

Is it the GPU or the motherboard?

Regardless, the logic board needs to be replaced if it's the built-in graphics or dedicated graphics is failing.

What triggers the kernel panic? You can install gfxCardStatus to force the mac to use either dedicated/built-in graphic as a workaround until it fails for good.

I've tried using both integrated and dedicated graphic when watching movies or using iMovies. It still fails...

It's just a sudden crash.

Roughly how much it would take to change a logic board locally, or at QCD? Thanks!

Edit: Oh, it's retailing on ifixit.com for USD$899.. Sigh. I guess I should get a new MBP or MBA then?

not cheap bro, at least $1k.

When you said you tried using both, you already installed gfxCardStatus and it crashed on either?

The built in options in Energy Saver does not allow you to choose the built-in GPU, either you force it to use the dedicated GPU or set it to automatically switch between the 2 and most of the time graphic intensive programs will trigger a switch to to dedicated graphics.

Damn, I will have to wait for Broadwell chips to be released then.

Yes, I have installed gfxCardStatus, and force using either integrated or discrete and it still fails.

I guess it is finally the end of the road? :S

You can go online and buy from parts reseller and DIY it yourself.

still gonna cost you a few hundreds at least though.

Right now, it's my graphic card, GT330 causing issue.

How much to replace?

If you're referring to the dedicated graphic card on your MacBook Pro, as I mentioned before, you need to replace the logic board as well because it's soldered onto the logic board.

Workaround, just use gfxcardstatus to force your Mac to use the built-in graphic card until your logic board blows off for good.
