Rabbit Seller - This lady was selling a lot of bunnies. Many were seen crowding in front where the rabbit playpen was to touch and stroke them.

Puppies - Locked in cages, some of them are yapping so pitifully.

That was all for the pets section as we did not have the time to explore the place.

Choconana - Frozen Chocolate Banana, anyone?

Time to say bye bye to Chatuchak as we took the train back to town and transferred a cab to go to Chinatown for dinner.

Armed with a not so detailed map with just an arrow pointing to an empty space along a street plus a few lines of handwritten instructions on how to get there, we were trying our best to search for the Hua Seng Heng Gold Shop which would gave us a clue on how to get there.

The taxi driver pointed to a narrow lane and let us alight. So we happily follow the path but it lead us to a maze of alleys with no restaurant in sight. As we walked through a few dark alleys trying to search for the restaurant, it started to drizzle. When we finally reached a T-junction and the rain was starting to get heavier, we almost wanted to give up. Finally I decided to try this dark gloomy narrow alley which doesn't look like it will lead us to anywhere. Here I asked for direction and yes, we struck gold, someone actually knew of the place and point us out of the back alley.

Yim Yim Restaurant - This place was highly recommended by my uncle and family who came here often for the roast suckling pig. A search on the net and the good reviews seem to confirm this. No idea why it said Jim Jim and not Yim Yim on the signboard.

Yim Yim Restaurant
89 Padsai Road., Sampanthawong (behind Hua Seng Heng Gold Shop, on the 2/F of the same building as Tang Jai Yuu Restaurant),
Bangkok, 10100,
Thailand
Tel: 02-2242203, 2242205

First impression when we stepped into the restaurant. The decrepit decor is messy and gloomy. Boxes of supplies for the kitchen and the owners’ personal junk stacked along one side of the wall and around one of the pillar occupied much of the dining room. There was also a grandfather clock among the junk.

222-YimYim.jpg

The restaurant is run by an old Teochew couple which you can spot below. The old man’s father started the restaurant more than 80 years ago and he is carrying on the tradition. Ah Ma is camera shy so that was the only picture I had of her.

221-YimYim.jpg

222-YimYim.jpg

This place was packed with senior citizens occupying a few large tables.

While the Prawn Roll we got in Singapore had more pork stuffing, here actually you can taste the prawn filling which had a springy texture to the bite.

223-YimYim.jpg

I liked the seafood and tofu combination of this Claypot Seafood and Tofu dish. The generous amount of cuttlefish was cooked to just the right texture and came together with the mushroom and tofu in a claypot with bubbling brown sauce.

224-YimYim.jpg

225-YimYim.jpg

Oyster Omelette - I normally do not like oysters be it raw or cooked but this dish surprised me with it's exceptionally plump and succulent oysters that were very fresh. You don't even get that yucky taste of an oyster if you know what I meant.

226-YimYim.jpg

The problem with the Oyster Omelette here is that most have that starchy taste but not this one. One difference here is the adding of beansprouts which gave the dish an added crunchy texture and also to reduce the greasiness.

Spring Onions and Sweet Sauce - This spring onions in a glass of cold water to keep them fresh was for the roast suckling pig. But we wondered how this goes with the pig when there was no crepes to wrap it up. Don't tell me to eat it just like that...

228-YimYim.jpg

229-YimYim.jpg

Roast Suckling Pig - This golden brown piglet was just the correct size it should be. I have seen and eaten those bigger pig which you just eat the skin while the rest of meat and fats goes into stir fry but the problem is that you are eating only the crispy skin minus the fats and meat below which gives it the unique taste.

Roast Suckling Pig - At this size, you can eat the whole pig saved for bones in the legs and mouth area. Piggy need some oil blotting papers as there was a layer of excess oil underneath it. In case you like to know, it cost 1700 baht.

232-YimYim.jpg

See that layer of fats in between the skin and the meat (if you called that meat)? When you bite into one piece, the crispy skin crackled and the fats oozed inside your mouth. Heavenly. :lick: We saw the next table also order the suckling pig and theirs came with slices of bread.

233-YimYim.jpg

Piglet left its ear here. :D

234-YimYim.jpg

Yim Yim Restaurant's Owner - He came to our table to recommend and take our order for foods since the staffs don't seem to be able to understand English or Mandarin. When I asked for a picture of him, he obliged and posed for this.

Fish Head Steamboat with Yam - We asked the owner to recommend a soup and he mention fish with either yam or cabbage. No, you can't have both yam and cabbage so we picked yam. There was even charcoal inside the chimney.

236-YimYim.jpg

237-YimYim.jpg

The yam I had was so soft while that piece of fish was packed with jelly-like collagen. The soup was rich with the sweetness of the fish and vegetables. At least I don't feel thirsty after drinking the soup.

238-YimYim.jpg

239-YimYim.jpg

All of us agreed that the five dishes we had was very good, some of which were recommended by the owner himself.

Having came a long way here, we voted for desserts too. Owner suggested the below items.

Sweetened Taro Sticks (反沙芋头) - This is the first time I have eaten this dish. The yam pieces are deep fried to crispy then coated with a layer of sugar which melted due to the heat. And you get a sugar shell on the outside and a soft yam core inside. Although too sweet for me, this was quite good.

240-YimYim.jpg

Yam Paste aka Or Nee (芋泥) - At first I thought they had served us gingko nuts and red dates dessert as it look too soupy. But this was actually their version of Or Nee.

241-YimYim.jpg

242-YimYim.jpg

Wrapped inside the lump of yam paste was glutinous rice. I can't accept this version of Or Nee plus I do not like gingko nuts so I hardly touched it.The same goes for the others too.

243-YimYim.jpg

Overall, this was indeed a good meal except for the desserts. I cannot remembered the exact amount of the bill as they just offered a scribbled total on a piece of paper which did not come back to us. I think total bill was around 3600 baht for the five of us.

Some very big Durians we came across while shopping in Chinatown.

244-Chinatown.jpg

We dropped by a titbits store to buy some local products before heading to Health Land for foot massage. Don't know if I was too tired and dozed off or if the massager did not use enough strength, I did not felt the usual pain in my feet. That painless experience cost 250 baht. :D

Time to call it a night, so we hopped into separate taxi and went off in different directions.

End of Day 3

Day 4 - The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Platinum Mall and Four Faced Buddha

A new day and a new buffet to conquer. :D This was the second of the buffet quest, only me and my friend attended this lunch while the rest are out shopping somewhere else. It's also the best in the class in term of foods quality and quantity. Their loss is our gain.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit - A contemporary retreat in the heart of Bangkok’s shopping and restaurant district with direct access to the Skytrain and subway stations.

They got this Orchid with a few arching stalks of yellowish green flowers. Very pretty indeed.

247-TheWestin.jpg

But we are not here to admire or smell the flowers, we are here solely for this Three Restaurants, One Great Sunday Lunch feast. For the price of one buffet, you get to eat the foods from three different restaurants and they are: Taste, Kisso and Zest Bar.

First up, Taste Restaurant. An all day dining restaurant serving enticing gourmet international cuisine in a visually dramatic setting. Diners can enjoy a gourmet buffet or order a la carte dishes in this refreshing venue. It's located on the 7th floor of The Westin Grande Sukhumvit.

We chose to seat here next to the floor to ceiling glass panels as it was brighter and offered a nice view of the sky garden outside.

Chilled Prawns - Kudos to the restaurant for de-shelling the prawns for us, saving us the trouble of having to do it ourselves.

Take your pick on these plump Chilled Mussels.

Oysters and Condiments - These oysters are sitting on a bed carved of ice. Eat them plain or with the many condiments provided.
