I need some advice. I sent in application to 8 china unis to study MBBS and then come back to singapore to be a doctor. the 8 china unis are recognised by singapore medical council.
http://www.healthprofessionals.gov.... Registrable Basic Medical Qualifications.pdf

the course is taught in english. depending on the uni the fees are SGD $9000 to SGD 18,000 a year.

is this a good move? you know anyone who have studied in china and returned to singapore to be a doctor? i plan to be a doctor for 10 years here in singapore and then relocate to australia when i am mid 30s. can someone tell me if studying in china mbbs is worth it?

I think that isn't the problem.I guess many don't really have the experience to help you since very few people went for overseas medical education, let alone to China medical schools.

Anyways,I will try to help answer your question :)

If I am not wrong, you need to do the 7yr master of medicine or 8yr doctor of medicine from China universities to be recognized by Singapore. Mbbs is not recognized directly by Smc,you can check that from the link you sent me:2nd schedule on the bottom of the page under People's republic of China.

However,if you will to do specialist training after graduation from mbbs, then that will negate the mbbs requirements, but you definitely can't do that training in Sg as the mbbs is not recognized.

Strange move to make though, since you intend to come to Singapore to practise medicine till mid 30s and leave to Australia. Not saying that it's impossible, but it will be better to decide between Australia/Singapore since each country has their own variety of medical conditions.

You can apply to Australia directly if you are interested in doing specialty training under the Royal Australian College of Physicians, but I haven't looked up on recognition of Chinese universities so you have to do research on that.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask me more questions.

P.S. I am a medical aspirant aiming for Australia medical school under the postgraduate entry and looking to do my specialty studies there.

Basically you are not getting a reply because very very very few people actually pursue medicine qualification in China with the intention of working in Singapore and then further relocating to Australia.

Given such a low incidence of people actually choosing such a path, it is nearly impossible for you to find someone on this forum who would be able to advise on this.

People do not just slam others or talk nonsense on the forums. If you have looked through other threads, the forums have been very useful to many people. You need to understand how rare your situation is which is the reason why there may not be anyone on this forum who would be able to advise you on it.

seriously, with an attitude like that i'm not sure you'll attract many responses.. but anyway

I personally would be very cautious about taking it up, because as jedrek pointed out it will take a minimum of 6 years and if you do a quick search online you can find questions similar to the one you're asking and their responses. I believe you would still have to do your internship or training in China which would involve the use of Chinese. Also read a recent article in the New York Times that says most universities in China simply translate their curriculum from Chinese to English, so it's more suited to local students there with a good command of English rather than foreign students (not specifically about MBBS though). Someone also pointed out that the medicine curriculum there focuses on TCM rather than Western medicine - I guess you would have to check out the subjects offered by the schools individually but it's something to keep in mind. And another note of caution, unless you're sure this doesn't apply to you - it may not be all that easy to relocate and find a job in Australia.

If you're really sure you want to go ahead and do it though, good luck! It seems like you would really need to have a lot of dedication and commitment though so once you've decided on it, I hope you won't give up. All the best.

You are late to the party by about 10 years.
About 5 years back, the MBBS from these uni were recognized and about 10 Singaporeans managed to secure internships in SG until it was revealed that the curriculum for the MBBS has inadequate clinical exposure. The requirement was then raised to Master or MD, which takes 7 to 8 years ( and the extra 2-3 years is the clinical exposure)
After these MBBS, to proceed to the master or MD program in China, u got to sit for their local graduate entry exams, in CHINESE to qualify. These are the same exams that the LOCALs take. If u cannot qualify, then gg.com to you, because u wasted 5 years without anything to show for. Do you think u can beat them?

1. It's cheap, but you are not getting your value. A china MD is worthless if you you cannot pull your weight while working. You will just failed your internship and become jobless.

2. Go to australia to work in your 30s? Australia has no lack of doctors. The whole india continent wants to work there. They churn out 3500 local graduates a year for the last 10 years. By 2017, even australian graduate are not guaranteed internships...
The young consultants in their 30s will not retired for another 30 years and like the NHS, the australia system is nearing bankrupty and they are shutting down hospital beds.

You are again late to the game by 20 years.

3. in short, bad move. China is cheap, but success rate low. You go australia study, spend more, but higher chance of success.

4. Trust me, u are not the first one to have that idea.

and again, whats with the fascination of Singaporean wanting to be doctors?
Trust me la, it's not worth it. What want to save people lives, cure cancer etc. Do u know how freaking hard dr have to work when u are a junior? 12 hour a day at least, then 1 month 3-4 overnight calls of >36 hours and your weekends have to come back and see patients. Dont watch too much TV and see Dr very shuai , drive sports car, have hot babes or hunk as husband take out that incurable brain tumor and become a hero.

In reality, when u become a GP, pple come to you for MC so they dun have to go work. You work day and evening to pay that $8K rent so that u make decent money.
You specialise in medicine is ZZz. Gen med is whole day pneumonia, urinary tract infection or dengue. Cardio whole day is your chest pain. GAstro whole day is your gastric pain. Oncology whole day sell false promises to patient, he got pancreatic cancer is 1 year prognosis must still say, lets try this try that, maybe can cure. Peds, deal with gan cheong kiasee parents is kill me. What's worse is the social stuff that comes with the work. Ah ma at home fall, no child come end up send ah ma where? Or your family member who write letters to MP complain everything?
You do surgery work until no day no night that even your baby grow up dont recognize u. And then what? stupid patient and family members complain against u...End of the day, if u make a million bucks a year still worth it, but if u make like 20% of that, laugh liao.

WHY is there a fascination with singaporean to become doctors?
Trust me la, go be a dentist. Better. Smart one got good grades to do medicine, the TRULY smart one with good grades to do medicine do dentistry instead.

China Universities not easy to get into , those listed at the best of the best.

Even locals have difficulty. I doubt the medium of instruction is in English.

the entire course is in english. you then take mandarin as a separate subject. the real traditional mandarin. not the type you hear on a daily basis.

Ts has to work in China for 3 years before given a temporary license to practise in Singapore. And after you get the temporary licence, you have to work another 3-5 years before you can specialize.

You will be wasting 3 years.

And all these 8 MBBS are direct masters and PhD programs catered ONLY to mainland Chinese.

What you are applying are the English ones which is only till MBBS and NOT recognized by SMC for conditional license.

Yup but the reality is that these MBBS are not recognized by SMC. Only the direct masters and PhDs are recognized. But these programs are only open to mainland Chinese.

Taking the MBBS and then do a masters or PhD doesn't work either. You need a direct entry to the Masters or PhD programmes.

It is best to check with SMC before embarking.

Good luck!
