Hi guys
Just a noob question so bear with me, the surface pro 3 comes with office 365 which is valid for 1 yr, last time i remember office is perpetual license one, you buy once use forever etc..

Whats the difference ah and which one more worth it? standalone license or office? i think standalone is called office student/home edition like last time?

Which one more worthwhile in terms of features and costs?

thanks

Got free Office 365 for a year?! :s22:

Office is moving to cloud based subscription like how Photoshop CC is. So after a year you will need to renew license or you will only get to use Office in reduced functionality.

Office 365 Personal is quite expensive at $98 a year but it does give you some advantages over Office 2013 Home and Student standalone, e.g. 1TB of Onedrive storage, free upgrade when newer versions of Office appear, 1 installation on a tablet, 1 installation on a mobile phone, and free Skype minutes.

But IMO the best would be to share with other family members to get Office 365 Home. That is $138 a year, but you can install Office on 5 computers, 5 tablets and 5 mobile phones, plus all the advantages listed above.

thanks for the reply. i already have a windows phone (1520) and office is preinstalled on it. It doesnt seem to have any expiry as far as i know. Does 365 have auto synochrization as in if you do any document on SP3 , it will automatcally update and be available on the phone, etc?

I still hesitant about the cost, for that i would rather transfer manually from SP3 to phone and just get the standalone version. I find it weird that windows is doing this as office is their sort of crown jewel and it will put them at a disadvantage to competitors like documents to go etc which have only stand alone cost.

If you have Office 2013 and you save the file to Onedrive or to Dropbox (only recently implemented), you can then open the file from your phone's Office app. This is part of Office 2013 and you can do that whether you have standalone or Office 365.

Not sure of what strategy Microsoft has. I guess the idea is that you get the subscription for your PC/Mac, then you can also unlock the full feature set in the phone and tablet apps, so people will stop going to alternatives like Google Docs or Hancom.

The new Android tablet versions of Word and Powerpoint are quite solid, and ironically more feature-rich than the Office Mobile app on the windows phone.

picking up a SP3 in a few days, is Microsoft Complete worth a purchase? Or better to save the cash?

Would love to find out too. I got my Illumishield matte from US. Despite arriving with a dent that leaves a big permanent bubble, I find it so good I don't want to take it off. Perfect fit and makes the pen writing feel more like paper.
