Is surface pro 3 ideal for personal computing?

Dear hardware zone.com members,

Am deciding if I should get a Surface Pro 3 in replacement of my laptop and would need some advice from experts here.

I am looking for a replacement laptop, for the following activities :

1. Internet surfing - 60%
2. Emails/MS Office - WORD/EXCEL/POWERPOINT (30%)
3. Video clips/Youtube - 10%

I don't play games with it.

At times, I would need to burn DVDs/CDs with documents/videos/photos, but that's not very common, maybe once a month maximum.

Perhaps once / twice a month, i travel with my laptop, so weight is a consideration.

My budget's <$2,000 in all..with MS OFFICE (PERSONAL) included.. accessories as well.

Would you recommend that I buy the surface pro?
If so, which one should I settle for - i3/i5/i7?
If not, what laptop and model would you recommend in view of my above suggested activities?

Grateful for any advice from kind souls out there.

Million thanks in advance.

Cheers.

go for the i5/128gb. Ur usage suggests a Surface Pro 3. However, internet usage burns the battery fast. As of now, Chrome burns battery on the SP3 damn fast. IE and FF does not have such issue. Other than that, its more than sufficient for your usage. I am happy with my SP3 so far.

With your use case, I would recommend getting surface 3 instead
It's lighter, smaller, has usb charging (don't need to bring extra charger around) and atom is definitely enough for what you need to do

Sp3 is a tad overkill and expensive for what u need to use it for (unless u prefer the 12" screen)

Is this really a good laptop?

I have been using my macbook for quite a few years and its gonna die soon. don't know whether to continue using a macbook or changing.. The design looks cool though.

If u r thinking of playing games on it, thn prob stick to MB. Other thn tht, its pretty decent for its size n weight...

Surface Pro 3 is more equivalent to the MacBook Air.
So if you want to game more often, MacBook pro might be better suited to you.
If you type on your lap a lot, MacBook Air
If you prefer a balance that skews towards portability, Surface Pro 3.

Of course, none of them are truly gaming machines with discrete display cards - so you have to find the one that best suits your use case.

The new cherry trail processor x7-Z8700 is more power efficient than i3 .
Smaller screen at 10inch and usb charging means greater portability using power banks:D .

Yes surface 3 is definitely the way to go for moongazerII usage .

Thanks to all bros. and sisters here for your kind expert advice.

Ignorant to the tech world, i just realised that Surface Pro 4 will be released soon by Jul 2015. Naturally, the next question surfaces - if i should wait? My existing laptop's not working anymore and I foresee that I will need to use a comp these three months for sure. Although I can use my wife's one but still.... it will be inconvenient for sure as she is a heavy pc user.

Will surface pro 4 be very different from pro 3? If released by Jul - when will SG expect to get the stocks i wonder? Any valuable insights on this will be most appreciated please.

Thank you.

Just some insight for u. SP3 was announced on May 2014, released late August 2014. So it would be probably be 3 months later SG will receive SP4.

I think its not much of gaming for me already. Been reading this thread and seems like there are quite an amount of good reviews for Surface pro 3.

But I saw another bro saying Surface pro 4 is coming out on July?

Need to take some time off to go down one of the shops and take a look at surface pro..

Released date always almost will be delayed ....

Even surface 3 ships only after may:s8: locally ...

Surface Pro 4 probably is just the cpu upgrade version of surface pro3 with more power efficient i3/i5/i7 along with minor camera , ram upgrades .

For me, I'm waiting for SP4 to be release & hope it come with LTE version.

If prediction is correct, SP4 will release after Windows 10 & I'm also hope that new flagship replacement for windows phone L1020 successor is also releasing together.

No rush for me to buy Surface product now as just change my laptop last year so will save money first while waiting. :s13:
