This looks like a thread for mobile broadband reviews.

Anyway, new reviews added, and hurray for a first for ST. Finally someone getting a proper speedtest to justify the cost behind 7.2Mbps.

abuddlah, suggest you do another test again in the wee hours, or non-peak hours (any time other than 6pm - 2am) and see if it improves. Not that having poor performance during peak hours is acceptable, but just to check whether the base station even functions properly during non-peak.

i think starhub blocked speedtest liao....or they blocking the ping...
i am using my phone as the modem to connect...using the starhub smartsurf plan

alright somehow after some tries i got it to work
i guess this would be under a new category
i am using the starhub smartsurf plan on my HTC touch HD.
Starhub usually come wif 2 access point, Starhub Internet and Gee!

The following speed test is Gee! 3G


This is Starhub Internet

(at first was able to get arnd same speed as Gee! but i forgot to save)

Both were done indoors in AMK area.

Comments: disappointed cos they said max is 7.2mbps (though i dun think will go more than 4). but it may be due to the phone. Cos USB modems (eg huawei) can go up to higher speeds

Hmmm... any network expert here try the network load balancing in windows XP? Logically speaking it should work with LAN + 3.5G or 2x3.5G network.

I only have a M1 BBoM 1mbps at home...

If NLB work... maybe can consider to get another SH BBoM 1mbps.

I'm sure it will work, you can always invest a bit of money and tether your mobile phone as a second modem and try that.

have u tried using M1 and Singtel in Jurong West Near Jurong Point?

Which network is good here both peak or non peak?

Disclaimer. The below is based on my personal experience and may/may not reflect what others are experiencing.

M1 was giving me rubbish. Terminated it after a month.

1) Usually can't download large files (e.g. 200mb) from filehosting websites like rapidshare. Will get cancelled halfway.

2) Pages don't always load properly and thus need to refresh. e.g. Error 404.

3) Pictures don't load properly and are of inferior quality as compared to other ISPs. There's another thread on this already which only serves to confirm it.

4) Their Mifi device is problematic and its a widespread problem which caused them to remove the product from their shelves. I think it's quietly back though, but still with teething problems


Will never consider Singtel because of their 30gb/50gb data cap. My Starhub mobile broadband usage for December was 70gb.

i using 1mbps m1 mbb via huawei e1550.

it works pretty ok for 1mbps. i know >2mbps gonna have problems and wanted the cheapest on-the-go wireless, so got 1mbps.

so far so good, expo full speed, west full speed, tuas full speed but subject to reception. on mrt can use, driving can use google map, toilet also can use.

otherwise serves as a proper basic email device.

I'm really afraid that i might use over 12GB for netbook and Omnia II usage.

Anyone can advise me on this?

is 12GB enough for simple surfing and loading of youtube videos (on netbook) for a month?

hmm, cuz i dun wanna go over the 12GB.
Actuallly before these plan launch,
my frd using SingTel 1GB plan, he said canot finish using up the 1GB.
So i tot 12GB should b a problem. but still, i'm not v sure as he's using mobile, not netbook..

Yup Singtel mobile bb ping is very high.. M1 ping is relatively low for mobile broadband, hovering at 100-200+ms. Very stable for my side. And of cuz it's the cheapest with unlimited usage.

But to use it for gaming is still not advisable. Video streaming and surfing would still be possible.

Gaming? Can. Play offline games or non-RTSes that are dependent on fraction of a second actions/reactions.
I know I used to play AoE (the very first version) fine on 56K modem, with average of 200ms pings between 8 players.
So... mobile broadband can't be any worse than that!

But remember, the purpose for mobile broadband's existence is, for now, for a very specific purpose - internet connectivity on the go.
If you want to use it as a regular cabled broadband replacement, you'll have to be aware of the pros and cons. I hope this thread has done sufficiently well to let users make an informed choice, even if it has to be a part gamble.

so far all the mobile broadbands have high ping of 100 and above right? Is there any isp that can provide a ping of below 100ms if I do not wan a fixed line?
