Well, it sounds like you are against MR idea of going for 1gbps... I am doubtful of whether MR can substain that 1gbps or not as well, But im keeping my comments about it until it is up and running at least.
I'm only against MR's lack of transparency. They oversell everyone on the idea of 1Gbps and have 50Mbps CIR. But would they tell anyone that? No. Because that doesn't sell plans.

Just a silly question, IT show is coming, would there be different promo/packet/freebie given for same plan?

:D

My guess is it could be the same promotion but may be waived off the $58 service installation for new customers.

* The above is purely my wild guess.

Just my 2cent on this CIR

CIR in a none congested network is basically a none issue. I don't see too much of a concern for the CIR especially when MR 1Gbps plans will be running on their own dedicated infra for their own customers. The key statistic to when CIR will be important is the % utilization of the network in the backbone and core.

If the network is hardly utilized, 1Gbps CIR or no CIR will have a near none existent performance gain. Here again, all fibre subscribers are connected to the edge network of the ISP/RSP, thus giving you a CIR to the edge port of the network is even more pointless.

Remember, we are now talking about residential connectivity where a none existent SLA is a very common practise industry wide. Since there isn't a performance SLA, then quality delivery tools like QoS and CIR will be meaningless to argue about especially when its on the edge network where you can't even prove that your port card is saturated and CIR isn't being enforced.

My previous questions:

1. How do you know if MR is oversubscribing?
kitsura: No one knows really but do you seriously think they can survive without oversubscription? Maybe you should start an ISP with 1-2 users with each given 10Gbps bandwidth.

Since no one know if whether MR or VQ is oversubscribing, unless you are working in VQ or you have insider information.

2. Did MR quote you the CIR based on the worst case scenario?
kitsura: I'm sure MR lawyers are very careful what they put in corporate quotations or SLA since they can be held accountable for it. If that is worse case scenario then all IS department will take that figure into consideration in risk assessment.

Since the quotation is based on the worse case scenario, you may view it as very low but at least there is still 50 Mbps rather than totally down.

3. VQ does not have CIR and claimed that you will get the full speed or close to the full speed. Does they quote you the CIR based on the worst case scenario? If not, then isn't it equals to 0 CIR?
kitsura: CIR is for frame relay network only. How many horsepower does a Tesla S have? Since Tesla can't give you an answer that means it equals 0 so it can't move?!

Do you mean that not all ISPs need this Committed Information Rate (CIR)?

so how does a N56U and AC68U performance varies when they are subscribed to a similar ultra plan?

1Gbps plan with N56U, assume wireless connection setup, how much typical DL speed will I get?

Wired speed 802Mbps? Wireless will be 60% drop that will be 320Mbps?

1Gbps plan with AC68U, assume wireless connection setup, how much typical DL speed will I get?

Wired speed 754Mbps? Wireless will be 60% drop that will be 301Mbps?

That is weird that no one mentioned that AC68U wired speed is slower than N56U

meaning getting another wireless adapter that is ac standard on the other end?

Even if you have a AC wireless router but the other end is not a AC wireless adapter, you also could not fully utilize the AC wireless router.

Since the quotation is based on the worse case scenario, you may view it as very low but at least there is still 50 Mbps rather than totally down.
For example for metroethernet or leased line plans what you pay is what you get so you want a 100Mbps line you pay for it, simple as that. What that also means is that when you do a cost analysis the MR plan would be taken as 50Mbps plan rather than 1Gbps plan.

Again for Singtel, Starhub, VQ metroethernet or leased line plans there is no need to give CIR since you are effectively paying for full bandwidth. And the technology used like for leased line means you are using the whole line, 0 oversubscription since it's basically 1 to 1. Metroethernet is the new in thing as it allows better scalability and lower price but speed wise you can't really tell the difference.

CIR is really as a bandwidth measurement for frame relay networks which is typical of MPLS core based networks. Which again boils down to the fact that you can't use CIR to measure bandwidth or service level on leased line or metroethernet networks.

MR still doesnt support number porting yet right? Thats the only constraint thats preventing me from jumping over
