hey guys,

finally got my 2nd date for installation today.

came home and shock to see the wireless from M1 100mbps is so much better at avg. 40mbps DL, 30mbps UL....
to MR 1GBPS plan, giving me wireless 20mbps DL, 2 mbps UL.

Yes, I know wireless is depends on *blah blah we know the drill*, but hardware and such are all better quality than M1! same, distance, same computer. way lousier results. Do i need to configure some stuff??

hi, it would still be better to describe in more details of hardware used... could be just a matter of configuration.

hope that you do know that your wireless speed is not dependent on the provider?

if you use wired and it still give you 20/2 (dl/ul) then there is a problem. :)

I cant watch any twitch streams, am on the 1gbps plan. Using lan cable connecting directly to the router. Even my phone on SH 3.5g data can buffer on high settings. MR having difficulty playing medium settings.

The router is the basic one from MR, think its 56 something? Computer is iMac, same distance of about 10m away from router.

yes wireless is affected by surroundings, but the factors did not change one bit while on M1, except getting a better router from Asus.

don't have a cat5e cable, will get later and test.

but the core problem is wireless with M1 is much better than on MR. weird.

I read back that there's some firmware supposedly better? I did an update, but the speed is the same.

what router did M1 give you? they took it back? just trying to bring across that routers and internet providers are not related. it's not that MR owns the router brand or something. Try to get cat 6 cable instead of 5e. at least I never had a chance to get gigabit work on 5e (local link speed)

Good point. If you still have the M1 Router, try hooking it up to the ONT to see how well is the wireless speed.

This is frustrating.

I brought my macbk JUST RIGHT next to the router, gives me 75mbpsDL / 60mbps UL. M1 plan can give me up to 80mbps wireless.

Next, I tried direct cable 5e using brother's laptop, gave me this 276mpbs DL/ 475 mbps UL.

This is the first time i see upload is faster than download. did 4 times, every time is around this figure.

This isn't normal right?? Do I need to do some configuration thing?

Use your macbook, connect directly to the ONT using a CAT 6 cable. From what I can remember, MR would have given you a purple LAN cable which is CAT 6.

Then do a speed test. Should hit around 700-900++Mbps.

mine is the newer macbk, no more rj45 port. . .thats why use my brother's asus laptop, quite recently bought anyway. yeah, using the Cat6 one. hence this result.

there's a custom firmware thing? padavan? does it help a lot?

Need to see if its router or MR problem. Connect directly to the ONT and do a speedtest. See what is the result you get.

new macbook can get a thunderbolt adapter for ethernet. usb3.0 adapter might work. what is your brother's laptop specs? the UI all classic themed.. :o

anyway the 475 UL shows that the connection is able to go beyond 80. so the poor wireless might be either because its not on 5GHz or you should get a better router.

your router wireless setting should enable 2.4ghz and 5ghz, wireless n.

you don't get to keep the router M1 provided? can you be more specific on the router you have now? you said "56 something" is it n56?

if it is n56u, i just checked smallnetbuilder and 80Mbps seems correct for wireless on this model... so if you're wireless dependent you should consider to upgrade it

not planning to get wired for mac, need to do minor cabling which...not to my decision..

i can only enable either 2.4 or 5, but not both. which settings should i change?

tried on M1, totally cannot connect.. yep asus is n56u.

the M1 router might not connect if the WAN part is not set properly.. (i dont know what to set because im not on MR yet) hopefully someone can assist you with that if you want to try.

enable 2.4ghz if your mac is far away, the max speed will be slower. enable 5ghz if the router is in the same room as the mac.

here's a result from smallnetbuilder Router Charts - SmallNetBuilder even 5GHz max throughput is at 85Mbps.. i think the results are single stream

Finally decided to test with direct connection to ONT to laptop using the purple ethernet cable...

Still unable to hit >900Mbps...

And why is it so inconsistent? Or is this normal? Upwards of 200Mbps flunctuations? :s11:

Anyone have any idea when they are suppose to receive their first bill after installation? Mine was installed on 14 of June but until now still haven't receive the bill yet. I have emailed the MR billing department about this but they still haven't reply to me. I'm just concerned that will send me an accumulation of a few months of bill.

If you are worrying, just put a side that amount of money now and pay whenever they bill you.
