Hi, new to this whole NAS thing and am about to get my first NAS.

May I know if there is a difference between choosing RAID 5 and SHR if I am planning to start with 2x8TB drives in a 4 bay system, with plans to add more 8TB drives in the future? Or which will you choose if you are starting out?

Am curious cos I've seen some people saying they chose RAID 5 over SHR as they want the flexibility of migrating the drives over to another non-synology NAS and maintaining data integrity. TIA!

You need minimum 3 drives for RAID 5. You can start with SHR with 2 drives and add more later.

RAID 5 will need drives of same capacity while SHR allows mix.

Am I able to switch from SHR to RAID 5 in the future when I have more than 2 drives if I want? (just in case I wanna migrate over to new non-synology enclosures for some reason) So for now you recommend going with SHR over RAID 1 for 2 drives right?

Understand the part about mixing drives of different capacities. Don't think I will be buying drives of different capacities haha! 8tb is like the sweet spot 😁

Q1. Yes/No, Yes, it's a software raid you can change the raid type without wiping out all the content.

No, currently only support changing storage pool from SHR to SHR2. see below conversion table.

https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/StorageManager/storage_pool_change_raid_type

Beware it can takes days if not weeks... depending on capacity and contents inside the disks, CPU etc.

Q2. I use synology disk calculator to play around with different scenarios before deciding....
https://www.synology.com/en-sg/support/RAID_calculator

https://nascompares.com/2016/07/06/what-is-shr-and-what-is-the-difference-between-synology-hybrid-raid-and-ordinary-raid/

Q3. If the manufacturer stops the production for the model, and when a disk breaks down. You have no choice....

I just got my DS220+, was hoping this can replace my Google photo storage once June hit (ends of unlimited storage).

Was doing bulk upload via File Station with my Google takeout document. The transfer speed is horrible. 10gb of file took me more than 14 hours to be transfer via my LAN.

Thumb nail and viewing performance via Moment app is also very disappointing...

Wondering any suggestion from the folks here? This is my very first NAS system though :/

Your LAN 1Gbps connection? Your NAS have 1Gbps connection?

During transfer what kind of speed you are getting?

Try restarting your NAS. Sometimes I get very slow speeds and things go back to normal after a restart. Worth a try but 14 hours for 10gb is way too slow.
Could your NAS be indexing the images? That might affect the transfer since resources are being used to index images.

That's snail speed, as compared to what i get @107Mb, which took me 3hrs to upload >1Tb of photos, and 12hrs to index in Moments. Suspect your network or cable got problem, or dieing hdd/NAS.

(1) Check synology network interface. (Control Panel->Network). Make sure it's 1000Mbps, full duplex, MTU1500. SMB1-3 enabled only, disk encryption disabled.

(2) Check window transfer speed, should be >100Mb for 1Gbps network. Zip up a big file (10G) and throw to the nas, if cannot hit >50Mb them either the router or cable problem.

(3) Check synology CPU and network utilisations. If CPU too high (>50%) disable indexing first (under controlpanel ->Indexing service). Anyway it's super noisy when indexing....mines' permanently disabled.

Last resort, sent the NAS for RMA...

Is small files. Is normal.

Do a large file transfer and see what you get.

For small files i will usually recommend software like ftp client, copy software etc to transfer as these software can do parallel transfer over Windows sequential transfer.

In other words, u can transfer files simultaneously and this will help a lot for small size files

The problem indeed lies with the indexing.. indexing happens the moment you drag straight to the moment folders...

I'm rather disappointed on how efficient moment is. Perhaps shall wait for the new photos app once dsm 7 is ready.

Thanks for all the advice bros

I need some help..

I had attached a 6TB HDD as external with NTFS format and tried copying data to the external drive.

However when I connect the external drive to my laptop, the drive data is write protected and I couldn't delete or format the files.

Is there a way to remove the write protected function?

Hi Bro, any format recommendation?

I try using NAS to format the drive and ext only show 1.5TB instead of 6 TB.
While I use window format in NTFS, it shows 5.46TB but just that file copy from NAS is readable and unable delete.

I'm trying to copy my photos to external so that I can organise offline and to avoid using filestation so that I do not need my laptop connected and waiting for it to transfer.

1. off NAS - remember, OFF it.
2. take 1 drive out.
3. insert replacement drive
4. on NAS
5. click repair - in DSM
6. wait.

repeat for drive 2, 3.. etc.

i tested with a NTFS drive, i can see all of it. I think u need to check your drive. Use diskpart or what.

You can get a DX517 which is a 5-Bay Expansion Unit to connect to your existing 1517+ and you can add 5 more HDDs.

Synology DX517 5-Bay Expansion Unit
