Haha.
If u are thinking of future proofing, ask no question and just get the most expensive setup u can afford.
No expert or anyone can predict how the future technology will be and you want to future proof it?
Money will be better spent on getting the current techology for a setup which is the most relevant to you now rather than guessing what u will need in the future and buying them now which u may not even use in the future.
If you are really concern about the electrical bill for overclocking, i rather you use this effort by not turning on air con when sleeping at night.
The extra wattage comsume by overclocking is peanut when compared to the air conditioner.
You suggested I should get a rig which is most relevant to me now.
So if I'm gaming on an Asus 144 Hz 1080p monitor now, its pointless to get a GTX 980 as its overkill. Lucky I bought a nice GTX 970 to chug along as GTX 970 is the perfect card for 1080p (as well as the AMD R390).
But since all these are going to last me 5 years (I used to change my rig once every 3 years but found it pointless and money wasting, all the money went to Intel's and Nvidia's bank accounts), I might as well get something more future proof. I'm sure games 3-4 years from the date I set up my new rig will require slightly more power than a GTX 970/980 or an overclocked i5. If these games do come out, at least my current rig can tahan the assault, and if lucky, can last well into the 6th year.
I just find it not so logical to overclock an i5-6600K to match an i7-6700K. The performance might be roughly the same. But the power draw will be significantly higher than a stock i7-6700K. And the minus point is i5 lack of hyperthreading for the future. As for the i7-6700K, it works out to be roughly $100 more expensive, and <$100 premium over the i5 if we take 3-4 years of power draw into comparison. So I think paying at most a $100 premium for an i7-6700K over an i5-6600K might be worthwhile.
BTW, I have a Mitsubishi aircon but I haven't been using it for the past 3 years already. Always using a 65 watt fan. I'm very "Nvidia" conscious type of person even though I'm an AMD fanboy.
